What you'll learn in this digital photography class:

It can be intimidating trying to figure out what negatives work best for which processes and how to fine tune these negatives to best suit your needs and vision. This one day workshop was developed to give you a good foundation for creating and manipulating digital negatives for use with alternative printing processes, and is perfect for those looking to get started on a project from home with the tools and materials you already have.

In this workshop, you will be guided through the basics of digital negative creation and curve linearization with tutor demonstrations and hands-on practice. This session will cover working with a digital image in Photoshop and turning this image into a negative suitable for use in a self-selected contact printing process. Other topics covered may include a discussion on printer setup and basic guidelines, printer ink choices, media limitations, DMax and DMin, negative calibration: mid-tone adjustments with curves, saving an .ACV file, and troubleshooting. You are encouraged to contact print up to whatever size is preferable within the parameters of your printer. Since this is a work-along day and not a lecture, it is expected that you will have the required materials prepared for the workshop.

You will need access to and familiarity with the following:

Photoshop
A digital image file - Sourced from scanned negative, physical print, or digital camera.
A Quick/affordable analogue printing process .
Digital Printer - Focus on Epson and Cannon but advice can be given for home office and other negative printing types.

Media Parameters & Limitations.
DMax and DMin.
Printer setup & ink choices.
Negative calibration.
Troubleshooting.

Remote Learning

This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.

Upon registration, the instructor will send along additional information about how to log-on and participate in the class.

Refund Policy

In the event a student must cancel their registration for a workshop, they may do so any time before and up to 14 days prior to the workshop, and will receive a 100% refund of workshop cost plus any material fees. In the event a student must cancel attendance from a workshop after the registration deadline (14 days prior to the start of the workshop), this will be considered a withdrawal. The workshop costs and materials fees are not refundable but a 20% discount will be given toward another workshop.

There are situations that arise in which a workshop may need to be cancelled. In the event of a cancellation, students will be notiﬁed as soon as possible. Students are entitled to a full refund for the workshop cost and materials fee up to one week prior to workshop. A credit can also be given in the amount paid for the class to use at a later date. Penumbra is not responsible for any non-refundable travel costs (such as airfare, train tickets or accommodation costs). We would advise you to consider purchasing travel insurance.

Due to the intensive nature of our workshops, we cannot offer makeup sessions outside of workshop time or in future workshops. Instructors are not required to bring students up to date during scheduled workshop time for missed days or lateness. Refunds will not be given for absences or no shows.
