It can be intimidating trying to figure out what negatives work best for which processes and how to fine tune these negatives to best suit your needs and vision. This one day workshop was developed to give you a good foundation for creating and manipulating digital negatives for use with alternative printing processes, and is perfect for those looking to get started on a project from home with the tools and materials you already have.
In this workshop, you will be guided through the basics of digital negative creation and curve linearization with tutor demonstrations and hands-on practice. This session will cover working with a digital image in Photoshop and turning this image into a negative suitable for use in a self-selected contact printing process. Other topics covered may include a discussion on printer setup and basic guidelines, printer ink choices, media limitations, DMax and DMin, negative calibration: mid-tone adjustments with curves, saving an .ACV file, and troubleshooting. You are encouraged to contact print up to whatever size is preferable within the parameters of your printer. Since this is a work-along day and not a lecture, it is expected that you will have the required materials prepared for the workshop.
