Discover the Best Computer Basics Classes in Los Angeles

Computer basics include understanding how to troubleshoot common problems with personal computers, using the Internet safely and securely, sending email, and navigating a computer system like Windows. For those who aren’t new to computers, basic computer skills could be more specific, like learning a different coding language, how to use a particular software or application, or how to navigate a new operating system. With technology being deeply embedded in modern society, it’s important to have a grasp of computer basics.

Why You Should Learn Computer Basics in Los Angeles

We are now well into the Information Age, and almost everything is linked to data, information, computers, and the Internet. Just about everyone walks around with a tiny computer in their pocket or on their wrist, so it’s helpful to have some computer basics in your skills arsenal. Regardless of your profession, knowledge of computer systems, or being familiar with them at the very least, can mean the difference between you always being the last to know and being able to prepare for what’s coming.

Learning computer basics also gives your employable skills a boost. It’s not necessary to become a coder, but knowing how to navigate popular software efficiently will make you look more desirable to potential employers. And if you hone in on a specific type of computer coding, software, or application, you will further catapult yourself in the hiring rankings. You’ll even gain more independence in your personal life when you don’t have to get help restarting your personal computer, checking your email, or making a purchase online.

In-Person Computer Basics Classes in Los Angeles

In-person computer basics classes can take you a long way in your technology journey. Whether you’re a technophobe, a senior citizen, or an experienced developer who’s looking to learn a new skill, an in-person class can help you achieve your learning goals quickly.

Los Angeles City College in East Hollywood has free, noncredit courses for basic skills development and career training in addition to the typical college instruction. These classes fall under their Community Services. Classes are offered to students of all ages, skill levels, and professions. Students can take classes out of necessity or just for fun.

The Computers for Beginners Series is a four-week class for adults that will take learners from little to no experience with computers to being able to operate and use a computer, laptop, or mobile device confidently. This course starts by making computer knowledge accessible and helping students move past their fear and reservations about technology. It also covers Windows systems and file management, how to use the Internet safely, securely, and wisely, and how to navigate email applications.

El Camino College, located in Torrance, offers noncredit classes as well as workshops and career training. Although they are a college, these classes do not require college enrollment, transcripts, or testing. Anyone who meets the age requirements and prerequisites can take these classes for personal or professional development.

In Computer Basics, students will cover real-world practical computer skills in four sessions. The class is very engaging and is taught by a real IT professional (information technologist). Through lots of hands-on experience, learners get to use Windows systems, smartphones, printers, email, cloud technology, hard drives, and other key web technology. It’s a safe space to dive into the world of technology safely and to get all of your questions answered. Participants will even cover how to make their data accessible between their smartphone or mobile device and personal computer.

Rolling Robots began with aerospace engineers who wanted to watch their children have fun digging into their inner scientists. Robots are a lot of fun for children and Rolling Robots knows the joy of a child who is able to let their creativity and imagination fly. And that’s why this technology center for kids in Rolling Hills Estates is bringing the world of technology to kids through fun and engaging activities.

With the vast majority of youth knowing how to navigate all of this new technology almost instinctively, computer basics often look different for them. In Rolling Robot’s 3D Printing Design class, learners between the ages of eight and 11 will use Autodesk Fusion 360 software to draft 3D creations. This course teaches basic concepts related to three-dimensional computer-aided design and printing, drawing techniques, extruding, and mirroring. At the end of the week, each student will get to print one of their designs and take it home.

Virtual Computer Basics Classes

If a traditional classroom setting is how you prefer to learn, but you don’t have the ability to attend an in-person class, then online computer basics classes are an option. Sometimes the classes you’re interested in are not available in your area or in-person class times aren’t compatible with your schedule. Virtual classes help to bridge that gap so that you can get the education that you’re looking for. But they don’t allow for an instructor-to-student hands-on experience, and students often have to supply their own class materials.

Online classes are highly sought after because they offer learners a way to learn on their own terms. Students don’t have to spend time commuting to class, worry about timeliness due to traffic, or worry about interrupting a vacation. Online computer classes are a way to bring the classes to you, wherever you are in the world. Another advantage is class recordings. When online classes are recorded, students can go back and revisit them to study or reinforce the learning.

In Introduction to Excel-Learn Basics, participants learn how to build basic spreadsheets in a working environment. The learning objectives of this course include sorting data, formulas and functions, working with workbooks, worksheets, and worksheet tabs, and formatting for design. Learners will discover how Excel can make their workflow easier and become proficient in basic Excel operations.

High school-aged students who are interested in the field of computer and data science can benefit from the Computer Science Summer Program. This is a certificate course that will prepare students for the AP Computer Science exam. Participants don’t have to be a computer whiz to take this course, but curiosity about computer science and an open mind is necessary.

Photoshop CC In a Day is a class for participants ages 14 and older who are new to Photoshop. This level one Photoshop course covers topics including, using layers, retouching photos, and creating composite.
