What you'll learn in this tv writing class:
The 6-Week NYSL Film Screenplay Workshop will equip you with fundamental concepts, tools and techniques of screenplay craft, by teaching you how to build your seed idea into a unique and compelling story, and how to best bring out the essence of that story in screenplay form. All while receiving expert feedback from a professional screenwriter at every stage of the journey.
By fundamentals we don’t mean what is most basic, but what is most essential. The key elements you will combine to most effectively meet the needs of your particular story, and bring your screenplay into its fullest expression.
What You'll Learn
Over the course of the 6-Week Workshop you will be guided step-by-step through the various stages of screenplay development as you take your project from seed idea to script. Some key skills and ideas you’ll learn along the way are:
- How to find the best structure for your particular stories using fundamentals, not formulas.
- How to weave plots and emotional journeys that lead to a cathartic conclusion. Both for your characters and your audience.
- How to keep your readers/viewers engaged in your stories from beginning to end.
- How to craft truly satisfying ending
- How to create captivating multi-dimensional characters, and design your cast to bring out all of their various facets. (And when multi-dimensional characters are not your best bet.)
- How to write alive, specific and fresh-feeling dialogue.
- How to craft potent, dynamic scenes and sequences, and the difference between the two.
- Best strategies for breaking into the film business.
- How to use DIY filmmaking to boost your career, feed your soul, or both.

By the End
At the end of the NYSL Film Screenplay Workshop you'll emerge with first hand experience in all the components of screenwriting, a well thought out and detailed outline, a good chunk of your script written, a solid plan for getting it into the world once it's done, and the ability to do it all over again when the next movie idea comes to you, without the need for another class.
*You will also be eligible to take part in The LAB, should you care to finish your script under the guidance of your instructor.
Remote Learning
This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.
Upon registration, the instructor will send along additional information about how to log-on and participate in the class.

Refunds are given up until the end of the first class in the Pilot I & Pilot II workshops.
