What you'll learn in this film production class:

This online directing course will introduce you to the various ways to prepare to direct a narrative project.

This 1-day online instructor-led course will introduce you to many important techniques and concepts to help you prepare your script for your shoot. You will explore the role of the director in a narrative film and have hands-on experience staging your scene, and blocking your actors. You will practice creating overhead diagrams, shotlists, storyboards, and use advanced features such as placing your scene in an AR environment and creating animatics.

You will learn how to use your camera angles, lenses, shot sizes, and scene coverage effectively, and how to maintain screen direction, eye-line match, and continuity.

This course offers you practical directing exercises and techniques to build a deeper understanding of the craft. You will learn how to effectively communicate your vision with your actors and crew, with the goal of deepening and enhancing your visual storytelling skills.

We will have hands-on experience planning simple and complex scenes with multiple characters using a storyboarding app.

Learning Outcome:

  • Have a clearer understanding of the director's role and the filmmaking process
  • Master using the storyboarding app to translate your vision into a clear plan that includes overhead diagrams, shotlists, and storyboards.

Course Outline:

10:00 am to 1:00 pm

  • Analyzing iconic scenes in film history
  • Understanding the director's role and the filmmaking process

Lunch Break

2:00 pm to 5:00 pm

  • Planning a scene with multiple characters
  • Creating and exporting the scene's overhead diagrams, shotlists, storyboards, and animatics

Remote Learning

This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.
