Clinical Medical Assistant 120-Hours Classroom Instruction + 160-Hours Externship

Training for an exciting and rewarding career as a Clinical Medical Assistant has never been easier. In today’s busy medical practices, Clinical Medical Assistants are vital members of the medical team. In this course, students will train to assist the physician in providing quality patient care. Students will learn to obtain patient vital signs, assist with minor medical procedures, perform simple laboratory tests, give injections, perform venipuncture (phlebotomy), administer medications, and more. This program includes a 160-hour externship where students will be placed in a private practice, clinic, or urgent care facility.
Classroom Training: The program consists of 15 modules and includes topics such as: the healthcare system, ethics and law for the medical office, medical terminology, sterilization and disinfection, patient communication, vital signs, administrative medical assisting overview, the physical examination, assisting with medical specialties, anatomy and physiology, laboratory testing and procedures, administration of medication and intravenous therapy, patient communication and education, nutrition, mental health, professionalism, and obtaining employment. A variety of teaching modalities to promote active learning are incorporated into each class. These include skills demonstration, practice, and assessment; small group and large group discussion; role play; pairs and small group activities; games that teach; and problem solving through the introduction of case-based scenarios.
Externship: Upon successful completion of the classroom training, students will participate in a 160-hour externship, where they will hone their practical skills. Students are generally placed at local doctors’ offices, clinics, or specialty practices.
Credential: This program prepares and qualifies students to sit for the National Healthcareer Association Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam. Exam prep materials are included in tuition, and as part of the program, students will complete 17 online NHA CCMA test preparation modules.
Career Information: Medical assistants are unlicensed individuals who perform non-invasive routine technical support services under the supervision of a licensed physician and surgeon, podiatrist, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or nurse midwife in a medical office or clinical setting. While certification is preferred by many employers, it is not required.
