Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this drawing class:

Drawing and painting multi-figure stories is an ancient and exhilarating human activity. It can be intimidating to know where to start and difficult to know where to proceed.

In this workshop, students will learn how to refine and combine their ability to draw from imagination, life, and photographic reference as they develop strong, clear compositions.

THE WORKSHOP WILL INCLUDE:

I. INTRODUCTION (~ 30 min.)

  • A presentation by Carl on his own work and the traditions of historical and narrative painting that he draws from. Carl will show and describe his picture making process from concept to execution. Q&A included.

II. CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT AND SKETCHING (~ 45 min)

  • Students will produce 4-6 sketches for a possible finished painting. Beginning with a clear sense of direction is essential for making the best use of models and photographic reference. Carl will provide students with some broad prompts for developing their own compositions. These limitations will allow our use of the model to be as practical and efficient as possible, while also allowing for individual variety.

III. CONCEPT SELECTION, ENLARGEMENT, AND REFINEMENT (~ 45 min.)

  • The class will review each students’ sketches, provide critique, and narrow each artist to one image concept. Carl will advise on technical considerations throughout the process. Upon selection, each artist will work for about 30 minutes on a more detailed second draft of their picture. Students will be encouraged to proceed as far as possible in their work without reference.

—- BREAK —- (~20 min.)

IV. LIFE DRAWING WARMUP (~20 min.)

  • Students will begin by drawing our models for 20 minutes of 2-minute poses.

V. LIFE DRAWING FOCUS (~ 30 min.)

  • Students will begin this section with a clear idea of what information they need to gather from the male and female models that we’ll have on site. Models will begin by taking relatively neutral poses. Students will walk around the figures, finding and sketching the body parts and perspectives necessary for their compositions. Carl will rotate around the classroom, advising students on what to look for, how to collect it, and where it fits in their image.

VI. CREATING A REFERENCE LIBRARY ( ~ 40 min.)

  • Carl, each student, and both models will coordinate rapid photography sessions for the students’ compositions. This section will be extremely educational for all students, as Carl will give his advice on lighting, distance, perspective, and the capture of multiple angles for producing optimal reference.

VII. COMPLETING THE MASTER SKETCH ( ~ 60 min.)

  • Students will proceed with their sketches using their collected drawing and photographed reference. Carl will rotate around the classroom teaching and taking questions.

VIII. CLASS DISCUSSION ( ~ 10 min.)

  • The class will review each finished compositional sketch, providing critique and guidance for completing their finished work.

Students can present their own individual pieces and sketchbooks for critique and discussion that may go on for 15-20 minutes beyond the end of the workshop.
