What you'll learn in this encaustic class:

Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax with colored pigments. Learn about safety, materials, its origins, and explore mixed media wax painting combining with wax: image transfers, collages, pastels, pouring and embedding objects in wax, to impressionistic painting techniques.

Instructor's Recommended Supply List:

If students do not have any encaustic materials, the instructor recommends purchasing an Encaustic starter kit.

If students already have encaustic materials, they should bring the following:
  • wax medium (premixed beeswax and damar resin available in different sizes), either in blocks or pellets
  • assorted colors of pigmented wax paint (R&F paints, Enkaustikos, Miles Conrad, Evans Encaustic, to name a few companies)
  • Cradled wood panels or encausticbord panels
  • paint brushes to be used with wax, cheap inexpensive are best
  • empty metal cans, candle making tins (or empty, cleaned tuna containers make a good size for melting the wax paint on the griddle)
  • surface thermometer recommended
  • misc. items for collages, photo images printed on regular printer paper (NOT on photo paper)
Additional items provided for class:
  • assorted paint brushes in different widths
  • pottery tools for sculpting wax
  • scraping tools
  • oil pastels
  • powder charcoal
  • powder pigments
  • shellac
  • torch
  • tracing paper for transferring drawn images onto wax
Electric griddles will be provided at the EAC, I will provide a heat gun to be shared
