Reviews for Art Classes in Chicago

Art Classes in Chicago are rated 4.5 stars based on 791 verified reviews from actual CourseHorse.com purchasers.

  • Great intro into sewing basics. Very laid back and comfortable atmosphere.
  • It was great Mike very good teacher Thank you
  • Jyl is a real pro. Master carver, great teacher. Well-designed introduction to stone carving.
  • This was a delight! Michael Gaffney taught the class a ton of information in a clear and useful delivery. I had so much fun at the class, and I learned way more than I thought I would in just a few hours. Will definitely take another class.
  • Instructor communicated well and was knowledgeable.
  • I had a great experience in the screen printing class! Duff is a great instructor who is very knowledgeable and always kind and helpful. The environment he's curated there is very supportive and welcoming to everyone enrolled. I'd recommend Duff's class to anyone wanting to learn screen printing.
  • I had never done screenprinting before and Shari was a great teacher. Very knowledgeable and patient. My friend and I had a great time and would definitely do this class again. We both walked away with 2 fun shirts that we can't wait to wear!
  • Enjoyed learning the art of wet felting. Will definitely sign up for another class.
  • A great class and juyl gave us plenty if personalized attention. Would highly recommend.
  • I recommend this class at every level. The artist-teacher is excellent at managing students of different skills and making sure we're all safe and having fun. She is a brilliant thinker (who will explain how stonecarving is a uniquely reductive art, where you take something away instead of adding to), but is also so chill and welcoming to all kinds of students from all kinds of backgrounds. The stonecarving craft itself is a meditative experience, especially once you can wrap your mind around the fact that you're creating something new out of a natural material which is thousands of years old. But it's always creative, always active, always fun. The teacher's knowledge and artistry is everywhere, and the more you absorb the more you'll love the craft and the class. Look on the walls and floor and tables of her studio, ask her questions, and most of all, Listen to her stories. There is so much information, integrated in her life's work! In that one day I felt like I walked away with a month of stonecarving education. This is also the kind of class which will give more everytime you take it. I fully intend to take it again when I have the funds, and if I am ever wealthy somehow, I will go broke hiring Jyl to make beautiful things in marble.
  • The stone carving workshop with Jyl Bonaguro was excellent and made for an amazing day! The class is thoughtfully designed, guiding you through the use of various chisels and tools, and how to apply each step from initial shaping to final polishing. Jyl’s pre-class advice to consider an abstract design was very helpful, as it allowed me to experience the full process and focus on the fundamentals. I arrived with a clear idea, and after sketching, Jyl confirmed it was ideal for the timeline. I was thrilled with the outcome and left with a beautiful, highly polished sculpture that closely matched my vision. Whether you have an arts background or are just curious, this class is very approachable. The day flew by in a flow state, but Jyl kept us on track to ensure everyone completed their pieces. Each participant created a unique, beautiful sculpture, and it was clear everyone enjoyed themselves. I highly recommend this workshop to anyone interested in learning the basics of stone carving or simply looking for a rewarding, hands-on experience. Five stars!
  • I really enjoyed the class, I feel like Brenan was very kind and effectively showed us how to develop our photos. I liked the cadence of the class, and Brenan's instruction was very flexible and catered to each student well
  • The class was extremely flexible and I received a lot of 1:1 instruction. Learning a new skill is always hard, and a bit embarrassing because you have to kinda be bad at it first but I felt really comfortable and supported.
  • The class was well organized and a lot of fun. Bob is very knowledgeable and hopeful. Would highly recommend!
  • The course was fun! Well organized, clear instructions and positive feedback. I love the pumpkin I made. My only criticism is that there is insufficient handicap parking at the learning center. In my opinion, all of the spaces right at the learning center should be reserved for handicapped people.
  • Jyl hosted an amazing class! It was intimate, well-paced, and great for absolute beginners. I walked away proud of what I accomplished and genuinely surprised with my results. She’s clearly an excellent instructor and knows the craft inside and out. So much fun!
  • Thanks so much for an amazing class - it really included a lot of techniques in a short amount of time. I really enjoyed it.
  • I can’t believe how easy Michael makes it! I can actually make an arrangement . I really enjoyed it
  • Excellent class. Learned a ton, created a piece that was way better than I even thought possible in one day, and am really excited to try some more stone carving. Jyl was a great teacher, giving helpful guidance and giving personal attention to each student and their project. Highly recommend this course and might even take it again now that I know more and can learn better.
  • I’m thrilled to give this class a big, cheerful 5! I took the Intro to Painting, and it had such a warm, intimate atmosphere. The instructor was not only incredibly knowledgeable but also truly supportive, making it a fantastic environment for everyone, no matter their skill level. This experience has been a wonderful escape, allowing me to focus on creativity through painting during some major life changes. Attending a multi-week class for three hours has been an incredibly rewarding way to prioritize self-care. I’m genuinely grateful for classes like this and am already excited to have signed up for another one!
  • Great teacher. The space is also wonderful. Love the brightly lit room and going to class in a building filled with art.
  • Owners were so sweet, welcoming, and helping alongside while painting. Such a cool experience with the dimmed lighting and music.
  • If you ever care to entertain that crazy thought you once had about carving stone…Jyl Bonaguro is the artist you should meet. Really like that this hands-on class is held in her working studio in Chicago where you’re surrounded by inspirational projects both finished and in-progress. All of them beautiful. Also like that this introductory course is just six hours in length (all you need for a first taste) and that the pricing is beyond reasonable for what you get. Jyl gets you right into the work and moves from person-to-person coaching each one individually until you all finish the day with newly found skills and instincts. She knows her stuff and knows how to get you there too. I looked for a stone class for a while before settling on Jyl. Know I made the right choice. Don’t hesitate to jump in. HIGHLY recommended.
  • Great class. Jyl was very helpful and answered all the questions we had during our class. Love the finished product we made. Hope to do stone carving again.
  • Class was a great introduction to stone carving from an artist who is an expert in the medium. Class was well thought out, taxing on the body, but a great experience overall. Jyl was kind and created a wonderful space to create.
  • Great class and the teacher, Michael Gaffney was so knowledgable about arrangements and a good entertainer! He made it fun. Plus I came home with three arrangements that I made and love!!
  • The Instructor Kathy Cunningham was great! She is patient and always willing to help and full of knowledge willing to share all she knows.
  • Great workshop with the guidance and expertise of Ron ! Ron is very experienced in all aspects of photography… makes it clear and accessible. Learning a new way to approach street photography and depth of field! Thank you
  • Jamie is a great teacher. Enjoyed the class and learned a lot.
  • It was very good indeed. The instructor knew their stuff well, and wasn't afraid to tell us this. We all walked out with great quality stained glass pieces that we can all be proud of.
  • Had a great day in class with Jyl. She kept us all on track with great instruction and tips. Highly recommend this class.
  • Absolutely phenomenal class! I've developed a whole new level of appreciation for the art. Highly recommend it for anyone looking to explore their creative side and delve deeper into this captivating art form! Teacher is amazing and truly passionate. I will be back.
  • Couldn’t be happier with this class. Great pace. Great teacher. Love that there is free parking!
  • Jyl is amazing! I had so much fun learning to sculpt at this class. Really liked the small class size very intimate and you get a lot of 1:1 assistance as you create your masterpiece. Highly recommend.
  • Wonderful, as are all Bonnie's classes!
  • I had an absolutely great time. Jyl is an amazing teacher, and thanks to her I've made great progress in just a matter of one day. She really understood what I was trying to build, and helped me throughout the day to get there. I highly recommend the course.
  • Loved this class! Jyl is a fantastic teacher who knows her craft extensively, and pays close attention to all of her students. I found her class structure to be great, and she knew how to help all of us achieve our goals in a limited time. Her stone carving workshop is physical and I left with a little sculpture I am quite happy with, and a newfound love for sculpting. Highly recommend to those who have an interest in learning the craft and want to focus on sharpening their skills in only a day!
  • This class was a lot of fun. I knew nothing about it before starting and ending up leaving with a carving I am pretty proud of. Definitely sparked my interest in carving other things!
  • Duffy is an engaging instructor and the class is thorough and relaxed. Learned what I was hoping to and had a chance to practice it.
  • Duffy O’Connor conducts this screen printing class with an abundance of patience and is an excellent creative resource. I really enjoy this class and find the other students to be a great deal of fun and always willing to provide assistance.
  • This was a fantastic class! As someone that’s wanted to do stone carving with proper tools for a very long time, it felt like a dream come true to do so under the guidance of such a kind and skilled artist.
  • Ron was an excellent instructor, especially for beginners. He helped ensure the content was easy to understand and provided really great recommendations on how to use a camera without overcomplicating things. Really nice person, accommodating, and made sure to answer every question.
  • Got to learn all the tools & steps of stone carving and ask every question I had with ample one on one instruction time!
  • Pen, Ink and Watercolor has proven a wonderful art experience encompassing teaching of technique, skill and medium as well as sharing up to date information on the current art world. Michelle Kogan is a notable teacher and artist, supportive of student growth and experimentation. I have signed on again for another session.
  • Wonderful class. Jyl is an excellent teacher. While it is a beginner class, the progression you see from beginning to end is astounding! If you are seeking a creative outlet and don't mind a little dust and some sore muscles, you would be hard pressed to find a better class!
  • Fantastic class! Jyl was amazing - she provided great instruction, was completely engaged and created a great learning experience. I'm thinking about taking the class again because I had so much fun.
  • The class was great. I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
  • Great teacher!!!
  • While challenging, Jyl did an excellent job navigating the group through all of the steps to create a stone masterpiece. I would definitely recommend the class and maybe even take it again!
  • This was a very good class, and a great introduction to stone carving. The class was thoughtfully organized, which made things easy for the students. Jyl is a talented artist, as well as a very good teacher who was able to share her expertise and deep knowledge with the students. Highly recommended.

In-person art classes are the best way to learn art. You’ll get personalized feedback and instruction, live demonstrations, and chances to network with other artists in your area. You can take a one-time art class or sign up for a class that meets multiple times.

A great art class to take is Macbeth's Art (Ages 16+) from Evanston Art Center. This class meets six times for three hours and is located in Evanston, Illinois, making it a great course for those who live just outside the Chicago area.

This art class combines Shakespeare and art by creating paintings in response to Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.” It’s a unique course that allows students to shine in their creativity. The class has an average size of ten people and is open to artists and readers of all levels.

Another great class to take is Mixed Media Art from Discovery Center. The class meets four times for two hours each and is open to students ages 16 and older. During the class, students will create dynamic, multi-layered compositions with a variety of materials, including watercolors, acrylic ink, images, found objects, and pastels. In addition, students will learn photo transferring, collage, printing, drawing, painting, and assemblage.

All of the materials that you’ll need are included in the class. However, you’ll need to bring a $35 materials fee on the first day of class to use the plentiful materials available. This class also has an average size of ten people, which makes it perfect for those looking for smaller and more personalized art classes.

The Evanston Art Center also offers an Introduction to Figure Drawing course that meets for 12 sessions. This boot camp-style class welcomes intermediate students who have experience in drawing but have never attempted to capture the human body. The class uses nude models to help students better understand human anatomy.

Most of the class will use charcoal as a medium, but throughout the 12 weeks of classes, you’ll also learn to use ink wash and other techniques. You will also learn techniques of representation such as composition, contract, and line quality. Although figure drawing is challenging, you’ll walk away from this class with a solid understanding of the most important concepts.

Evanston Art Center also offers a unique art class called The Artists’ Studio. This class meets for six sessions that offer studio time for you to work on projects of your personal preference with the availability of individualized instruction and techniques. You will be encouraged to explore new concepts of line, composition, color, and scale.

The class also includes group critiques and references to classic and contemporary art to inspire you. You can bring your choice of medium to the first class and learn from the others who attend. Each class lasts three hours, giving you plenty of time to learn in the art studio.

Virtual Art Classes & Schools

Virtual art classes are a great option for those who can’t or don’t have time to commute to in-person art classes. Online art classes offer many of the same benefits and aim to teach you the basics of art from an entirely remote setting, meaning that you can learn from the comfort of your own home. To give you a good idea of what to expect from online art classes, here are some of the most popular virtual classes available.

A unique class that you can take is Beginners Art Journaling from The Art Studio NY. This class meets for four sessions and lasts one hour and 15 minutes. It’s open to anyone ages 18 and older and teaches you to unlock your creative expression. The class focuses on “art journaling, ” where you will express your inner world through a variety of materials, colors, layers, and subject matter.

Rather than focusing on a single piece, you’ll learn to create a journal that expresses your world of thought through mini art pieces that work together to create an overarching theme. It allows you to express your thoughts and creativity while combining mediums in a unique manner. The class calls itself a “Fear-Free Beginners Art Journaling Class” because you’re allowed to express yourself entirely and authentically.

If you’re new to art and want to learn the basics, consider taking Drawing for Beginners from 92nd Street Y. The class includes five sessions and is open to beginners. During the course, you’ll learn elements of art, including line, shape, shadow, value, tone, form, and perspective. The class also includes demonstrations and critiques to help you improve and learn from others in the class.

The Chicago Botanic Garden offers a class called Painting with Gouache: Online that meets six times for two and a half hours. During the class, you’ll learn how to use gouache, which is an opaque watercolor that has a flat, graphic quality that gives it a modern look. The class talks about artists who are well-known for using the medium, including Henri Matisse.
