Reviews for Craft Classes in Chicago

Craft Classes in Chicago are rated 4.5 stars based on 370 verified reviews from actual CourseHorse.com purchasers.

  • Jyl is a real pro. Master carver, great teacher. Well-designed introduction to stone carving.
  • This was a delight! Michael Gaffney taught the class a ton of information in a clear and useful delivery. I had so much fun at the class, and I learned way more than I thought I would in just a few hours. Will definitely take another class.
  • I had a great experience in the screen printing class! Duff is a great instructor who is very knowledgeable and always kind and helpful. The environment he's curated there is very supportive and welcoming to everyone enrolled. I'd recommend Duff's class to anyone wanting to learn screen printing.
  • I had never done screenprinting before and Shari was a great teacher. Very knowledgeable and patient. My friend and I had a great time and would definitely do this class again. We both walked away with 2 fun shirts that we can't wait to wear!
  • A great class and juyl gave us plenty if personalized attention. Would highly recommend.
  • I recommend this class at every level. The artist-teacher is excellent at managing students of different skills and making sure we're all safe and having fun. She is a brilliant thinker (who will explain how stonecarving is a uniquely reductive art, where you take something away instead of adding to), but is also so chill and welcoming to all kinds of students from all kinds of backgrounds. The stonecarving craft itself is a meditative experience, especially once you can wrap your mind around the fact that you're creating something new out of a natural material which is thousands of years old. But it's always creative, always active, always fun. The teacher's knowledge and artistry is everywhere, and the more you absorb the more you'll love the craft and the class. Look on the walls and floor and tables of her studio, ask her questions, and most of all, Listen to her stories. There is so much information, integrated in her life's work! In that one day I felt like I walked away with a month of stonecarving education. This is also the kind of class which will give more everytime you take it. I fully intend to take it again when I have the funds, and if I am ever wealthy somehow, I will go broke hiring Jyl to make beautiful things in marble.
  • The stone carving workshop with Jyl Bonaguro was excellent and made for an amazing day! The class is thoughtfully designed, guiding you through the use of various chisels and tools, and how to apply each step from initial shaping to final polishing. Jyl’s pre-class advice to consider an abstract design was very helpful, as it allowed me to experience the full process and focus on the fundamentals. I arrived with a clear idea, and after sketching, Jyl confirmed it was ideal for the timeline. I was thrilled with the outcome and left with a beautiful, highly polished sculpture that closely matched my vision. Whether you have an arts background or are just curious, this class is very approachable. The day flew by in a flow state, but Jyl kept us on track to ensure everyone completed their pieces. Each participant created a unique, beautiful sculpture, and it was clear everyone enjoyed themselves. I highly recommend this workshop to anyone interested in learning the basics of stone carving or simply looking for a rewarding, hands-on experience. Five stars!
  • The class was well organized and a lot of fun. Bob is very knowledgeable and hopeful. Would highly recommend!
  • Jyl hosted an amazing class! It was intimate, well-paced, and great for absolute beginners. I walked away proud of what I accomplished and genuinely surprised with my results. She’s clearly an excellent instructor and knows the craft inside and out. So much fun!
  • I can’t believe how easy Michael makes it! I can actually make an arrangement . I really enjoyed it
  • Excellent class. Learned a ton, created a piece that was way better than I even thought possible in one day, and am really excited to try some more stone carving. Jyl was a great teacher, giving helpful guidance and giving personal attention to each student and their project. Highly recommend this course and might even take it again now that I know more and can learn better.
  • If you ever care to entertain that crazy thought you once had about carving stone…Jyl Bonaguro is the artist you should meet. Really like that this hands-on class is held in her working studio in Chicago where you’re surrounded by inspirational projects both finished and in-progress. All of them beautiful. Also like that this introductory course is just six hours in length (all you need for a first taste) and that the pricing is beyond reasonable for what you get. Jyl gets you right into the work and moves from person-to-person coaching each one individually until you all finish the day with newly found skills and instincts. She knows her stuff and knows how to get you there too. I looked for a stone class for a while before settling on Jyl. Know I made the right choice. Don’t hesitate to jump in. HIGHLY recommended.
  • Great class. Jyl was very helpful and answered all the questions we had during our class. Love the finished product we made. Hope to do stone carving again.
  • Class was a great introduction to stone carving from an artist who is an expert in the medium. Class was well thought out, taxing on the body, but a great experience overall. Jyl was kind and created a wonderful space to create.
  • Great class and the teacher, Michael Gaffney was so knowledgable about arrangements and a good entertainer! He made it fun. Plus I came home with three arrangements that I made and love!!
  • Jamie is a great teacher. Enjoyed the class and learned a lot.
  • It was very good indeed. The instructor knew their stuff well, and wasn't afraid to tell us this. We all walked out with great quality stained glass pieces that we can all be proud of.
  • Had a great day in class with Jyl. She kept us all on track with great instruction and tips. Highly recommend this class.
  • Absolutely phenomenal class! I've developed a whole new level of appreciation for the art. Highly recommend it for anyone looking to explore their creative side and delve deeper into this captivating art form! Teacher is amazing and truly passionate. I will be back.
  • Jyl is amazing! I had so much fun learning to sculpt at this class. Really liked the small class size very intimate and you get a lot of 1:1 assistance as you create your masterpiece. Highly recommend.
  • Wonderful, as are all Bonnie's classes!
  • I had an absolutely great time. Jyl is an amazing teacher, and thanks to her I've made great progress in just a matter of one day. She really understood what I was trying to build, and helped me throughout the day to get there. I highly recommend the course.
  • Loved this class! Jyl is a fantastic teacher who knows her craft extensively, and pays close attention to all of her students. I found her class structure to be great, and she knew how to help all of us achieve our goals in a limited time. Her stone carving workshop is physical and I left with a little sculpture I am quite happy with, and a newfound love for sculpting. Highly recommend to those who have an interest in learning the craft and want to focus on sharpening their skills in only a day!
  • This class was a lot of fun. I knew nothing about it before starting and ending up leaving with a carving I am pretty proud of. Definitely sparked my interest in carving other things!
  • Duffy is an engaging instructor and the class is thorough and relaxed. Learned what I was hoping to and had a chance to practice it.
  • Duffy O’Connor conducts this screen printing class with an abundance of patience and is an excellent creative resource. I really enjoy this class and find the other students to be a great deal of fun and always willing to provide assistance.
  • This was a fantastic class! As someone that’s wanted to do stone carving with proper tools for a very long time, it felt like a dream come true to do so under the guidance of such a kind and skilled artist.
  • Got to learn all the tools & steps of stone carving and ask every question I had with ample one on one instruction time!
  • Wonderful class. Jyl is an excellent teacher. While it is a beginner class, the progression you see from beginning to end is astounding! If you are seeking a creative outlet and don't mind a little dust and some sore muscles, you would be hard pressed to find a better class!
  • Fantastic class! Jyl was amazing - she provided great instruction, was completely engaged and created a great learning experience. I'm thinking about taking the class again because I had so much fun.
  • The class was great. I thoroughly enjoyed myself.
  • Great teacher!!!
  • While challenging, Jyl did an excellent job navigating the group through all of the steps to create a stone masterpiece. I would definitely recommend the class and maybe even take it again!
  • This was a very good class, and a great introduction to stone carving. The class was thoughtfully organized, which made things easy for the students. Jyl is a talented artist, as well as a very good teacher who was able to share her expertise and deep knowledge with the students. Highly recommended.
  • Great value
  • Worth the price.
  • Super informative! Michael Gaffney teaches simple and useful techniques and I was amazed at how pretty my arrangements were! I recommend this class!
  • First, if you're interested in doing your own design in this class, it's not going to happen. The description says you can but it would take up too much class time and this is just an intro class. HOWEVER, the pattern they do provide you is really pretty and the choice of glass they provide to make your masterpiece is awesome. The instructor I had, Isabel, was super knowledgeable and she was really approachable. Some teachers are intimidating and you're too scared of them to ask questions but Isabel was really sweet and kind. Last thing: you pay for the class up front and you pay for the materials day-of. If you want your stained glass creation framed and hung by a chain, it'll cost extra. That's not a complaint, it's just good to know if you're looking at the price of the class/creation.
  • Overall very informative. The teacher was great at answering questions. She was direct, to the point, and could articulate what you needed to know within 4 sentences. This is not a negative, she knew her craft so well that she understood the best way to phrase things to beginners. Before taking this class the idea of cutting glass or soldering were intimidating. Now I've done both and trying again doesn't seem scary at all. I actually look forward to it. My only critique would be that I'd have liked a bit more ventilation in the workspace itself, but it was cold outside that day so I can understand why the windows stayed closed. The folks at the center itself were very nice. I arrived early and they let me wait inside where it was warm. I would definitely recommend this class to other people thinking about taking up stained glass. It's a good condensed class for beginners to get a feel for the process and skills involved.
  • I thoroughly enjoyed this course and highly recommend it! Jyl was an excellent instructor. She is very hands-on and encouraging. She'll make you feel like a natural sculptor!
  • Great class. Really hands on. The right size. New appreciation for the skill and dedication stone carving requires. Prepare for hard work!!!
  • Truly a one of a kind experience! After just a few swings of your hammer and chisel, you immediately get a sense of how incredible the great master stone carvers were. As rewarding as this class was, be warned, it is not for the faint of heart…it’s a workout! Jyl is not only a skilled artist, she’s also a great hands on instructor. Definitely recommend!
  • Talk about a different experience! I really enjoyed the class and Jyl was excellent at working with people to get their art as close to their desired design as possible. It was a chill environment and I would totally recommend others to the course.
  • Jyl is an amazing instructor! Very personable and knowledgeable. Knew when to help and guide and when to let students figure it out. The class itself was taxing physically but so fun and worth it.
  • Working with stone is challenging but super rewarding in the end. Jyl is a great teacher, she provided guidance for each student so they can fully realize their vision. I was pretty amazed at what we were all able to accomplish in a single day. All 5 students in the class were able to complete their pieces with time to take photos and chat. I highly recommend this course for anyone looking to try something special and unique.
  • This was so much more fun than we could have imagined!! Super educational too. Jyl is a fantastic teacher and extremely talented. So cool being able to bring home our sculptures the same day. We can’t wait to sign up for another one of Jyl’s classes soon!
  • Loved the experience! Michael Gaffney was Great and such a good teacher!I had a Ball!!
  • Had a great time! Much more comprehensive than I expected and we were given a great opportunity to explore the craft process from start to finish. Jyl was a fantastic teacher and really did a good job of working with each student at their individual skill level and direction, a trait which not all artists possess. I felt like a potential student could sign-up for the course having little or lots of background in the arts and spend a fine day getting to know the materials and exploring their own gestures and expression in the craft with the full support of teacher and classmates. A great time for sure and well worth the cost, especially considering the materials provided, tools available for use and super interesting studio space in which to work.
  • This was a wonderful class that was very well paced especially for a 6.5 hour course. Jyl is an exceptional instructor who provided superb art direction and instructions which really helped me learn the tools and techniques of stone carving. Highly recommended!
  • Fantastic teacher! Had a great time and learned a ton’
