Suminagashi: Japanese Marbling

Suminagashi means floating ink. This traditional art form originated in eighteenth century Japan. Marble-like patterns are created by floating ink on water. Dip one brush in ink and one in colorless ink—a mixture of water and wetting agent. Using a brush, you touch the tip of the ink brush to the surface of the water. A puddle of ink will form. Touch the colorless brush to the center of the puddle. Repeat until the surface is covered with rings of ink, making a unique and gentle pattern. The designs are transferred to absorbent paper. The process is meditative, relaxing, and encourages individual expression and creativity. No two are ever alike. Open to your creativity with this gentle ancient art. Finished pieces may be framed or used in paper craft projects. 

Note: Please bring a Sumi-e sketch pad of rice paper (Hosho), 9 x 12 inches. You may also bring scraps of fabric, envelopes and/or note paper. No art experience necessary.
