What you'll learn in this art history class:

How do sounds shape communities? How does noise—manmade and natural, organized and chaotic—intersect with architecture and urban space? What role do hearing and listening play in the understanding of self and one’s place in the world? “Sites and Soundscapes in the Italian Renaissance” is a day-long symposium exploring aural experience and the built environment in Renaissance Italy. Schedule 8:30 to 9 am Coffee and Continental Breakfast 9 to 10:30 am Readers Meet Author Session A panel of scholars will deliver critiques of the new book The Noisy Renaissance: Sound, Architecture, and Florentine Urban Life, by Niall Atkinson, University of Chicago, followed by a response from the author and a discussion among the panel and with the audience. Panelists: Jesús Escobar, Northwestern University; Alexander Fisher, University of British Columbia; and Lia Markey, The Newberry Library. 10:30 to 11 am Coffee Break 11 am to 12:30 pm Keynote Address Deborah Howard, University of Cambridge, Emerita 12:30 to 2 Lunch Break 2 to 3:15 Frottole Program by the Newberry Consort early music chamber ensemble Performance with commentary of late fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century Italian music by Bartolomeo Tromboncino and Franciscus Bossinensis. Violin ensemble, vocal ensemble, and lute.

  • For single- and two-session seminars, tuition (less 10% processing fee) is refundable until 2 business day before the seminar begins.
  • For seminars meeting more than twice, tuition (less 10% processing fee) is refundable until 2 business day prior to the second class meeting; we cannot give a refund once the seminar has met a second time.
After this the class has met (for the second time in a longer course) we pay our instructors and do not give any refunds. We do not offer letters of credit.

If the seminar fails to reach a minimum of seven registrations before the early registration deadline (one week before the first day of the term), the seminar will be canceled and all participants will be refunded less a 5% non-refundable registration fee. The instructor is required to teach the seminar if it reaches seven registrations prior to the early registration deadline. In some cases, a seminar may be offered with fewer than seven registrations at the option of the instructor.
