Reviews for Wine Tasting Classes

Wine Tasting Classes are rated 4.6 stars based on 85,251 verified reviews from actual CourseHorse.com purchasers.

  • This was an eye-opening experience. James, the instructor, is an incredible teacher with a breadth of artistic knowledge. He legitimately understands art and is a very effective teacher. You'll take classes in a real studio, a no-nonsense, all-business creating environment, not a YouTube influencer's manicured stage. I left the session motivated to continue my art pursuit and purchased more supplies to make it possible. This brief course was an incredible value for the money and I recommend it highly.
  • Great class! There was a very warm welcome and check in. The teacher was great and we got to make a beautiful arrangement!
  • Raphael is an excellent instructor. His style of teaching touches beyond the technical aspects of painting and drawing. He covers the history, the linguistic parallels, and the philosophy behind painting. Being a part of his class feels like I'm in a bygone era, where persistence toward singular aesthetic creations is celebrated, and the wisdom of the artists/philosophers the past are distilled in the proverbs that Raphael recites throughout the classes. Through Raphael's skillful instructions and his own reverence for art creation, I can fully appreciate the arts as a defining pillar of being human. I truly love spending time in his studio and look forward to learning more of what I can do through the skills gained.
  • This course covered a great strategy for starting drawing. Over the three sessions I learned a technique called "mark mapping" which helps to build the scaffolding of drawing in a way that's really intuitive. The instructor then walks through how to fill in the shading "values" of the drawing and finally how to add details to the drawing. The drawings are usually of abstract shapes - mine was hardware. My sessions were all charcoal based but I was able to transfer the skills to pencil outside of the class relatively easily. It helped me get started with building a practice out of drawing.
  • Great class - learned a lot!
  • What a great opportunity to learn more about something we all do! I had an excellent experience with Ocie. He answered all of my questions and gave me tips about how and where to take pictures, as well as how to frame them. As a novice, I appreciated the attention and the freedom. I would highly recommend a Walk About and plan to sign up for more!
  • It was an amazing class. Chef Dan was patient and informative. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who would like to know how to prepare Sushi well in the home environment. This was my first time taking classes at this school, but I am looking forward to taking more of their classes. Thank you Chef Dan.
  • I got a lot out of this class. I've been to drawing classes where we're just told to draw without much guidance or instruction. Lucas gave us a framework and approach that was really helpful. We had a lot of time to draw. The class was maybe a dozen people so we got plenty of individual attention. The only suggestion I would make would be to give the students a chance to introduce themselves to one another. It would be nice to have a little bit more of a community. I'll definitely be back next week.
  • Baking a croissant can be very intimidating, especially for someone who is a novice in the kitchen. But this class walks you through the process. You work in teams with pre-measured and sorted ingredients, and in the end, you have some baked goods to take home!
  • Wonderful experience! The class is very well-structured so students can experience all the parts of a two-day process in a few hours. Chef Simon is an excellent teacher.
  • So fun! Really great environment.
  • I found Eva because I received a gift certificate to “Course Horse”. Anyway, I was looking for an “in-person” French class, but that wasn’t easy to find. And I live in New York City. Everything was ZOOM. But after the pandemic, everyone seemed to like it better than being “in person”. Except me. But now, I’m a believer. Eva has been in BERLIN, and it seems as if she were right in my living room. I couldn’t be happier. She is fluent in so many languages that one can feel humbled. But Eva doesn’t allow that. Within a few lessons, she will try very hard to discern how best you learn. Do you respond to visual or audio, or written? Right now, I’m reading Le Petit Prince and Tintin comics. Love both, and I’m learning a lot. Oh….Did I say that she’s a kind, patient, and forever resourceful teacher? I really couldn’t recommend her more.
  • Five months ago, I decided that I wanted to learn another language and committed to a comprehensive language-learning approach, incorporating apps, books, podcasts, and more. I was struggling with knowing if I was learning the right things or in the right way. After being tutored by Ms. Rosales for just a month, I found myself to be much more confident in reading and speaking French. At the 3-month mark, I can confidently say that working with her was the best decision I've made in learning any language, and I wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone I meet.
  • very fun and easy! I loved that we learned about the correct basil and Parmesan to use for homemade pesto
  • The session went excellent, Erin was fantastic!!
  • Paulie was awesome and we had a great time. Thank you so much!
  • I took this class with my husband and two older kids. We had a great time & are thrilled with our stained glass succulents. Justin was a fun and informative instructor and helped us create our original pieces in an easy to understand way. We truly enjoyed learning this new art and our time in the class. We will definitely look for more classes offered by Element Art Center! Highly recommend!
  • steve was super knowledgeable. loved the route of the tour
  • Great entry level workshop with a nice variety of tool instruction! I was admittedly looking for something bigger (the name was a little misleading to me) but the skills can be applied elsewhere. Friendly instructors and cool vibe!
  • He taught me a lot in the two hour session I was with him. I think more then I expected.
  • Felt welcoming and peaceful. Nice to be in a group of quiet focus
  • Fun class, well organized. Croissants were delish!
  • Learned so much in this class! Instructor was knowledgeable and personable, food was great, and I feel like I have a lot of takeaways that I'll be able to actually implement on my own.
  • Challenging in the best way! Loved the mix of technique and freedom. Left sweaty, inspired, and wanting more. Definitely coming back.
  • Really enjoyed this class. Chef Jen was great and made the recipes easy to follow. I appreciated the baking tips I could bring back to my own kitchen. I think doing both recipes was fine in the time we were given. Eating the treats was the best!
  • Alina Oswald is an excellent, patient instructor.. The lesson was methodical and well-paced. She provided helpful printed material during the lesson and the next day emailed me extensive follow-up information relevant to the lesson. I recommend her highly!
  • I'm completely new, I took two classes. The atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming. The class has a group of people who consistently go there, so there is a community. Great intro to improv, and I totally will come back.
  • Great teacher! She was very patient and was able to pivot. Loved it.
  • Ocie was fabulous - skilled and clear! It was a pleasure taking this class!
  • Great instructors and very organized approach. Off beat wines and cheeses.
  • Our instruction was helpful, friendly, and experienced. The class was extremely immersive and exciting. Would definitely recommend and will come back!
  • I really enjoyed this class! Ocie patiently explained the fundamental concepts of photography, showed me how to use the menus and buttons on my new camera, and offered helpful critiques and exposure tips for the photos I took during the class. After just a few hours, I knew way more than when I started and felt confident to start taking pictures of the world around me.
  • What a great yoga center! I really enjoyed going there twice a week for 4 weeks and being led by the experienced and warm teacher Aspara. Most students didn’t have much yoga experience and each class explored one of the 5 foundations of yoga (breathing, meditation, diet, positive thinking and poses). We went through the twelve poses in a slow and controlled pace. No pressure here, you do what you can! Price is very reasonable since the center is supported by volunteers. I’m looking at taking another class.
  • It exceeded my expectations. Sam was such a gifted and thoughtful teacher. 10/10
  • Great intro into sewing basics. Very laid back and comfortable atmosphere.
  • Lots of personal attention, care, and encouragement, and everything provided. It really gave a good introduction to the skills and techniques you need to become a jeweler.
  • It was great - I learned a ton and the combination of classroom, walk-about in the class and the assignments were wonderful. Patricia, my teacher was so incredible in knowledge, enthusiasm and joy of teaching. I loved how small the classes were also. I highly recommend to anyone who is learning how to use their camera!
  • Peter was a fantastic teacher. I’m looking forward to taking more classes with him. The lessons have been invaluable and I feel really confident about my progress.
  • I really enjoyed the work. Finding my voice. Being challenged to write. Being honest. Learn to Take a risk. I would recommend to anyone. I’d definitely do it again.
  • Such an excellent way to be introduced to wheel throwing! Our instructor Siri was excellent— she explained the process well, and was very helpful as we encountered new questions and created new problems. We made multiple pieces each, and while only one firing is included in the class fee, the firing fee for additional pieces is so inexpensive that we ended up deciding to keep everything we made. We may be back to take more classes and learn more advanced skills :D
  • Anjali was a great teacher and the class really allowed everyone to move at this own pace. Supportive, helpful and insightful. Appreciated it all.
  • Exceptional! The instructor was inspiring and being in the Chicago Botanic Gardens was inspiring and a perfect setting to hone my photo skills. I highly recommend this course and I will be taking the intermediate.
  • Highly recommend. The Home Cooking kitchen is immaculate, and well stocked. Our instructor, Chef Al as super personable and shared several cooking tips for preparing dips, noodles, knife skills, deboning chicken .... and also provided detailed hand-outs so we could replicate at home. The class was fun, interactive and informative. What's more, we had time to test and enjoy a delicious Vietnamese dinner, family style, all within the 3 hour time slot. I absolutely loved the shrimp/pork spring rolls, and the marinated chicken. Loved it so much I've signed up for another class.
  • Loved this course so much I'm already trying to figure out a next level of it! Even as someone who already does cook at home, especially within my culture's cuisine I learned so much in this class. In particular strong foundational things that ground you in how to think about food and cooking so that we can continue exploring ingredients and flavors beyond what we do in class. Very highly recommend!
  • I had the BEST time at Aterlier Sucre. I have taken a few of their classes and was excited to try the new cake decorating class. Jennifer was an amazing instructor and the class was well-structured and easy to book. I would definitely recommend.
  • One of the best experiences I've had in a while. the chef was amazing the food was incredible, I would recommend to anyone that has never been or done a cooking class. 10 starts
  • My experience at Jalopy School of Music was a positive one. The class size was small(3 students) and that felt perfect for a beginner group. We had a great instructor, Kyle M. I still have a long way to go on my guitar journey and I felt like this was a good 1st step for me.
  • This was so fun! I brought my friend and we love to do arts projects. We brought our own beer and had a great time. There was not a lot of time to sip our beer during the class but that’s because we were very focused on the artwork. If you are a little unfamiliar with painting I would say the pace of the instruction may be a little fast. But I am already excited to come back.
  • My one-on-one makeup lesson with Lorin Cole was wonderful. She and I talked in advance about what I hoped to learn, and she created a session that met my goals perfectly. I left knowing how to update my look and what I needed in terms of a few different products to achieve that look. We reviewed my current makeup, she created a detailed list of what I use where, and gave me directions in writing with colors and techniques to reinforced what she taught me in person. I have been able to do everything she taught me on my own. Lorin is a real professional. She is as a former model, a working makeup artist, and a fine artist, all of which she puts into her customized guidance. This course was truly everything I wanted, and more.
  • Great class Prof. Andres is awesome.

Discover the Best Wine Tasting Classes Near Me

The popularity of wine has been steadily growing in the US throughout the past decade. 31% of surveyed Americans said they consume more wine than beer and liquor. Furthermore, it’s estimated that the average American wine drinker consumes 2.8 gallons of wine per year. The rise in the beverage’s popularity can be attributed to the introduction of online wine sellers, an exponential growth of American wine production, and the drink’s health benefits.

Wine is not just popular in the US, but around the world, and has been for thousands of years. There is no clear record of wine’s first creation, but the first traces of a wine-like substance have been found in 60-million-year-old fossils. Wine was created and further perfected across history by a wide range of people and cultures who learned the ideal way to de-stem, crush, and ferment the best grape varieties. Today, there are over 10,000 wine grape varieties that produce wines of varying tastes and smells.

The act of wine tasting has a history almost as storied as the history of wine itself. Greek philosophers like Plato and Aristotle described the flavors of wine in their writings, implying that the people in ancient times were focused on judging the quality of their wines. Wine tasting is a popular activity among wine enthusiasts. During a formal wine tasting, you’ll assess the quality of your wine based on its appearance, aroma, taste, and aftertaste. Wine tasting can also be done informally from the comfort of your own home.

Why You Should Learn Wine Tasting

If you’re already a wine drinker but have never been to a wine tasting, it’s highly recommended you partake in one to help broaden your palate. Oftentimes, people will find a wine they like and stick to it without trying other varieties. Wine tastings teach you how to pick out flavor notes and tastes. If you don’t like the wine you’re tasting, you can always just move on to the next one. At the end of the tasting, you may discover new flavor notes and wines that you love.

Attending a wine tasting is also a great social activity for you and your friends or you and your partner. People often book a wine tasting for Valentine’s Day or their anniversary. They’re also a popular corporate or holiday event for businesses. Wine tastings may take place inside or outside, in a garden, or on a patio or balcony, letting you enjoy your time outside. Some wine tastings also offer food options that can range from crudités to pizza.

At a wine tasting, you’ll typically try six to ten different wines. This will expose you to a variety of notes and flavor profiles. Trying a range of wines that are likely priced at different points will provide you with practical knowledge of them that you can take with you to restaurants. Once you have discovered which flavor notes you enjoy, you’ll know what wines to ask about the next time you’re out at dinner, as well as your budget.

Wines can range from low to high price points depending on different factors. Some of the most expensive wines in the world are aged in oak barrels, which adds both flavor and oxygen to the wine. The amount of time a wine was aged as well as the location of where the grapes were grown can also affect the price. Attending a formal wine tasting offers you the chance to try a variety of wines before making the commitment of purchasing one.

5 Ways to Learn Wine Tasting

Wine is easily accessible to anyone over the legal age, which means that wine tastings can take place anywhere and at any time. Wine aficionados tend to follow a more formal methodology of wine tasting, but plenty of wine enjoyers and new wine tasters simply get together to learn the history of the wines they’re tasting and discuss their flavor.

If you’re interested in wine tasting but don’t know where to get started, consider some of the following learning options:

  1. Take a formal in-person wine tasting class led by a sommelier (trained wine professional). Your sommelier will guide you through the historical and ecological differences in the wines you’re tasting, tasting techniques, flavor profiles, and more.
  2. Sign up for a live online wine tasting class. Online classes are led by live instructors who will answer your questions and introduce you to the basics of wine tasting. If you decide to take an online wine tasting class, be aware that most instructors will point you to a wine service that provides pick-up and/or delivery options.
  3. Take a self-paced on-demand class online. These classes are available for free and accessible to anyone with an internet connection. The benefit of a self-paced class is that you can work it into your schedule. On-demand classes are posted as videos, meaning you won’t have access to an instructor to ask questions.
  4. Look for a wine tasting book at your local bookstore or library. Books are a great way to learn about the history and process of winemaking. Wine tasting books will oftentimes include guides and include tips on how to handle wines.
  5. Find a guide online posted by a wine aficionado or sommelier. These helpful guides can be found online or for a fee.

In-Person Wine Tasting Classes

In-person wine tasting classes are offered across the US and available to anyone over the age of 21. These classes are taught by wine experts who will guide you through the basic principles of wine tasting as well as the history of the wines you consume in the class. These classes may focus on general wine knowledge or on vintage-specific information.

If you’re new to wine tasting, CocuSocial Cooking Classes in Hell’s Kitchen offers a comprehensive introductory class. In Wine Tasting 101 you’ll be provided an overview of the history of six wine samples (a Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé, Pinot Noir, and Merlot) in a relaxed, private setting. Your expert Sommelier will discuss the tasting and flavor notes of each wine along with pairings and everyday practical wine tips. You’ll leave this class with an awakened palate and a new appreciation for wine.

Riesling is a wine grape variety that originated in the Rhine River region. If you have an interest in this white wine, you’ll want to head over to The Wine Workshop in Manhattan for their 1970’s German Riesling Tasting. During this two-hour class, you’ll taste a number of Riesling vintages, with a focus on what are considered the best ones from the 1970s.

Murray’s Cheese offers wine and cheese classes for those who are interested in pairings. Beginners and professionals both are welcome to attend their Springtime Wine and Cheeseclass led by a cheese professional. If your flavor interests sway toward sweet, Murray’s Cheese also hosts a class where you can enjoy cheese, chocolate, and Rosé. An expert will guide you through your flavor journey, as you sample four French wines, four French kinds of cheeses, and an assortment of accouterments such as jam, honey, and meats.

If you want an in-depth explanation of the foundations of wine tasting and are near the downtown Los Angeles area, check out LearnAboutWine’s Wine Camp. This beginner-level class will build up your confidence as you explore the world of wine. Six samples will be tasted in this two-hour class. Your expert instructor will teach you about the best foods to pair with wine, how to serve wine, and even the wine-making process.

The Chopping Block Lincoln Square in Chicago offers How to Bluff Your Way Through Wine for wine tasters of all levels–even aficionados. This class focuses on the four main variables that determine the flavor of wine. Your sommelier will walk you through these variables and explain how they manage to make all wines both the same and unique. This class samples five international wines.

For a more casual night of wine tasting, The Chopping Block offers, Raise a Glass, an interactive tasting. This class includes a mini-lesson on the history of wine as you snack on wine-friendly foods. Three wines are featured in this class: two from Spain and one from Italy. Aside from regional differences, you’ll be able to compare the differences between a pink, white, and red wine. All wines purchased after the tasting will be 10% off.

Virtual Wine Tasting Classes

Attending an in-person wine tasting is a great way to meet and socialize with other people who have an interest in wines. However, in-person classes aren’t always accessible. They may not fit into your schedule or there might not be any scheduled near you.

If that’s the case, virtual classes are a great alternative. Virtual classes are taught by experts from around the country. They may be focused on wine tasting basics, like recognizing flavor notes and the history of winemaking, or they might be centered around a specific vintage.

In-person wine tastings will provide the wine for you. But, if you decide to take a virtual wine tasting class, you will be responsible for sourcing your own wine samples. Luckily, most virtual instructors will point you toward a supplier. You have the option of either picking up a wine tasting kit from them or having it delivered to you. There are quite a few online wine tasting classesavailable for you to take on CourseHorse.

The NYC Wine Company offers a virtual wine tasting class where you will sample wines made from grapes grown at vineyards located on islands and near volcanoes. The class, Islands & Volcanoes samples six wines over two sessions. Your live instructor will explain the unique properties of each wine that are largely thanks to their growing location, their differences, and how to find them. The wines your class samples may come from vineyards located in places such as the Canary Islands, Mount Etna, and Santorini, among others.

The NYC Wine Company regularly hosts virtual wine tastings focused on popular grape-growing regions like Italy, California, and France. Previous classes have included Italy: North to South and The Hidden California. If you’re interested in their classes, check back to CourseHorse regularly to see what new and returning virtual classes this company offers.

The San Francisco Wine School offers a large number of virtual wine tasting classes that you can take. Absolute beginners who are unsure of what wines to start with may be interested in their Intro to Italian Wines tasting class. If you’re unfamiliar with Italian wines specifically–which make up some of the most popular in the world–this virtual class is a great introduction to them. You’ll taste six different Italian wines and learn about the grapes, style, and diversity of some of Italy’s best wines.

Zinfandel vineyards make up nearly 10% of California’s grapevine acreage, contributing to Zinfandel’s staple status among American wines. In the San Francisco Wine School’s Zinfandels of the World, you’ll learn about its close relation to Croatian and Italian wines. This includes an in-depth explanation of the impact that climate and soil impact its growth throughout the world. If you know you love Zinfandel or are looking to improve your understanding of wine, this class is for you.

If you lean toward sweet wines, consider checking out the San Francisco Wine School’s tasting class, Sweet and Fortified Wines of the World. In this tasting class, you’ll learn about classic dessert wines and their production styles. Five to six wines will be tasted in this workshop, which can be taken as part of their Wine with Style series.

The San Francisco Wine School also runs an Advanced Blind Tasting program. Advanced wine tasters can attend several blind tastings where they will identify wines that are characterized by their high acidity or even their thin skin. You’ll learn to differentiate between regional and varietal identities in these tasting classes.

What Will I Need to Learn Wine Tasting?

If you take an in-person wine tasting class, the wines you will be sampling will be provided by the school or venue hosting the tasting. If you take an online wine tasting class, your instructor will likely direct you to a wine supplier where you can procure a tasting kit. Overall, wine tasting classes rarely require more than for you to show up ready to try out new wines. However, if you are looking to host your own wine tasting, you’ll need to make sure you have the items below.

  1. Two or more wines
  2. Wine-friendly snacks like cheese, chocolate, and nuts
  3. Water
  4. Wine glasses (two per person: one for white wines and one for red)
  5. Notepad and pen for note taking
  6. Comfortable seating

Is It Difficult to Learn Wine Tasting?

Wine tasting can be intimidating for those who don’t frequently drink wine, or anyone that does drink wine but isn’t used to paying attention to flavor notes, aromas, and other qualities. Knowing where to get started in your wine tasting journey can also be difficult. What if you don’t like the wines you’ve tasted? What if you don’t know what you should be looking for as you taste? Thankfully, with a little knowledge and guidance, wine tasting becomes a more approachable activity.

Although there are formal methods of wine tasting, wine tasting doesn’t necessarily need to follow these formal methods. You can have fun at home with a group of friends and a few wines you’d all like to try, or you can take a formal in-person wine tasting class led by a sommelier. Taking an in-person class with an expert instructor is a quick and thorough way of learning the history and process of wine making and the intricacies of regional wines or specific vintages you’re tasting during the class. You can also always pick up a book on wines and wine tasting to help get you started before taking a formal class.
