Reviews for Turkish Classes

Turkish Classes are rated 4.6 stars based on 85,245 verified reviews from actual CourseHorse.com purchasers.

  • This was an eye-opening experience. James, the instructor, is an incredible teacher with a breadth of artistic knowledge. He legitimately understands art and is a very effective teacher. You'll take classes in a real studio, a no-nonsense, all-business creating environment, not a YouTube influencer's manicured stage. I left the session motivated to continue my art pursuit and purchased more supplies to make it possible. This brief course was an incredible value for the money and I recommend it highly.
  • Great class! There was a very warm welcome and check in. The teacher was great and we got to make a beautiful arrangement!
  • Raphael is an excellent instructor. His style of teaching touches beyond the technical aspects of painting and drawing. He covers the history, the linguistic parallels, and the philosophy behind painting. Being a part of his class feels like I'm in a bygone era, where persistence toward singular aesthetic creations is celebrated, and the wisdom of the artists/philosophers the past are distilled in the proverbs that Raphael recites throughout the classes. Through Raphael's skillful instructions and his own reverence for art creation, I can fully appreciate the arts as a defining pillar of being human. I truly love spending time in his studio and look forward to learning more of what I can do through the skills gained.
  • This course covered a great strategy for starting drawing. Over the three sessions I learned a technique called "mark mapping" which helps to build the scaffolding of drawing in a way that's really intuitive. The instructor then walks through how to fill in the shading "values" of the drawing and finally how to add details to the drawing. The drawings are usually of abstract shapes - mine was hardware. My sessions were all charcoal based but I was able to transfer the skills to pencil outside of the class relatively easily. It helped me get started with building a practice out of drawing.
  • Great class - learned a lot!
  • What a great opportunity to learn more about something we all do! I had an excellent experience with Ocie. He answered all of my questions and gave me tips about how and where to take pictures, as well as how to frame them. As a novice, I appreciated the attention and the freedom. I would highly recommend a Walk About and plan to sign up for more!
  • It was an amazing class. Chef Dan was patient and informative. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who would like to know how to prepare Sushi well in the home environment. This was my first time taking classes at this school, but I am looking forward to taking more of their classes. Thank you Chef Dan.
  • I got a lot out of this class. I've been to drawing classes where we're just told to draw without much guidance or instruction. Lucas gave us a framework and approach that was really helpful. We had a lot of time to draw. The class was maybe a dozen people so we got plenty of individual attention. The only suggestion I would make would be to give the students a chance to introduce themselves to one another. It would be nice to have a little bit more of a community. I'll definitely be back next week.
  • Baking a croissant can be very intimidating, especially for someone who is a novice in the kitchen. But this class walks you through the process. You work in teams with pre-measured and sorted ingredients, and in the end, you have some baked goods to take home!
  • Wonderful experience! The class is very well-structured so students can experience all the parts of a two-day process in a few hours. Chef Simon is an excellent teacher.
  • So fun! Really great environment.
  • I found Eva because I received a gift certificate to “Course Horse”. Anyway, I was looking for an “in-person” French class, but that wasn’t easy to find. And I live in New York City. Everything was ZOOM. But after the pandemic, everyone seemed to like it better than being “in person”. Except me. But now, I’m a believer. Eva has been in BERLIN, and it seems as if she were right in my living room. I couldn’t be happier. She is fluent in so many languages that one can feel humbled. But Eva doesn’t allow that. Within a few lessons, she will try very hard to discern how best you learn. Do you respond to visual or audio, or written? Right now, I’m reading Le Petit Prince and Tintin comics. Love both, and I’m learning a lot. Oh….Did I say that she’s a kind, patient, and forever resourceful teacher? I really couldn’t recommend her more.
  • Five months ago, I decided that I wanted to learn another language and committed to a comprehensive language-learning approach, incorporating apps, books, podcasts, and more. I was struggling with knowing if I was learning the right things or in the right way. After being tutored by Ms. Rosales for just a month, I found myself to be much more confident in reading and speaking French. At the 3-month mark, I can confidently say that working with her was the best decision I've made in learning any language, and I wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone I meet.
  • very fun and easy! I loved that we learned about the correct basil and Parmesan to use for homemade pesto
  • The session went excellent, Erin was fantastic!!
  • Paulie was awesome and we had a great time. Thank you so much!
  • I took this class with my husband and two older kids. We had a great time & are thrilled with our stained glass succulents. Justin was a fun and informative instructor and helped us create our original pieces in an easy to understand way. We truly enjoyed learning this new art and our time in the class. We will definitely look for more classes offered by Element Art Center! Highly recommend!
  • steve was super knowledgeable. loved the route of the tour
  • Great entry level workshop with a nice variety of tool instruction! I was admittedly looking for something bigger (the name was a little misleading to me) but the skills can be applied elsewhere. Friendly instructors and cool vibe!
  • He taught me a lot in the two hour session I was with him. I think more then I expected.
  • Felt welcoming and peaceful. Nice to be in a group of quiet focus
  • Fun class, well organized. Croissants were delish!
  • Learned so much in this class! Instructor was knowledgeable and personable, food was great, and I feel like I have a lot of takeaways that I'll be able to actually implement on my own.
  • Challenging in the best way! Loved the mix of technique and freedom. Left sweaty, inspired, and wanting more. Definitely coming back.
  • Really enjoyed this class. Chef Jen was great and made the recipes easy to follow. I appreciated the baking tips I could bring back to my own kitchen. I think doing both recipes was fine in the time we were given. Eating the treats was the best!
  • Alina Oswald is an excellent, patient instructor.. The lesson was methodical and well-paced. She provided helpful printed material during the lesson and the next day emailed me extensive follow-up information relevant to the lesson. I recommend her highly!
  • I'm completely new, I took two classes. The atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming. The class has a group of people who consistently go there, so there is a community. Great intro to improv, and I totally will come back.
  • Great teacher! She was very patient and was able to pivot. Loved it.
  • Ocie was fabulous - skilled and clear! It was a pleasure taking this class!
  • Great instructors and very organized approach. Off beat wines and cheeses.
  • Our instruction was helpful, friendly, and experienced. The class was extremely immersive and exciting. Would definitely recommend and will come back!
  • I really enjoyed this class! Ocie patiently explained the fundamental concepts of photography, showed me how to use the menus and buttons on my new camera, and offered helpful critiques and exposure tips for the photos I took during the class. After just a few hours, I knew way more than when I started and felt confident to start taking pictures of the world around me.
  • What a great yoga center! I really enjoyed going there twice a week for 4 weeks and being led by the experienced and warm teacher Aspara. Most students didn’t have much yoga experience and each class explored one of the 5 foundations of yoga (breathing, meditation, diet, positive thinking and poses). We went through the twelve poses in a slow and controlled pace. No pressure here, you do what you can! Price is very reasonable since the center is supported by volunteers. I’m looking at taking another class.
  • It exceeded my expectations. Sam was such a gifted and thoughtful teacher. 10/10
  • Great intro into sewing basics. Very laid back and comfortable atmosphere.
  • Lots of personal attention, care, and encouragement, and everything provided. It really gave a good introduction to the skills and techniques you need to become a jeweler.
  • It was great - I learned a ton and the combination of classroom, walk-about in the class and the assignments were wonderful. Patricia, my teacher was so incredible in knowledge, enthusiasm and joy of teaching. I loved how small the classes were also. I highly recommend to anyone who is learning how to use their camera!
  • Peter was a fantastic teacher. I’m looking forward to taking more classes with him. The lessons have been invaluable and I feel really confident about my progress.
  • I really enjoyed the work. Finding my voice. Being challenged to write. Being honest. Learn to Take a risk. I would recommend to anyone. I’d definitely do it again.
  • Such an excellent way to be introduced to wheel throwing! Our instructor Siri was excellent— she explained the process well, and was very helpful as we encountered new questions and created new problems. We made multiple pieces each, and while only one firing is included in the class fee, the firing fee for additional pieces is so inexpensive that we ended up deciding to keep everything we made. We may be back to take more classes and learn more advanced skills :D
  • Anjali was a great teacher and the class really allowed everyone to move at this own pace. Supportive, helpful and insightful. Appreciated it all.
  • Exceptional! The instructor was inspiring and being in the Chicago Botanic Gardens was inspiring and a perfect setting to hone my photo skills. I highly recommend this course and I will be taking the intermediate.
  • Highly recommend. The Home Cooking kitchen is immaculate, and well stocked. Our instructor, Chef Al as super personable and shared several cooking tips for preparing dips, noodles, knife skills, deboning chicken .... and also provided detailed hand-outs so we could replicate at home. The class was fun, interactive and informative. What's more, we had time to test and enjoy a delicious Vietnamese dinner, family style, all within the 3 hour time slot. I absolutely loved the shrimp/pork spring rolls, and the marinated chicken. Loved it so much I've signed up for another class.
  • Loved this course so much I'm already trying to figure out a next level of it! Even as someone who already does cook at home, especially within my culture's cuisine I learned so much in this class. In particular strong foundational things that ground you in how to think about food and cooking so that we can continue exploring ingredients and flavors beyond what we do in class. Very highly recommend!
  • I had the BEST time at Aterlier Sucre. I have taken a few of their classes and was excited to try the new cake decorating class. Jennifer was an amazing instructor and the class was well-structured and easy to book. I would definitely recommend.
  • One of the best experiences I've had in a while. the chef was amazing the food was incredible, I would recommend to anyone that has never been or done a cooking class. 10 starts
  • My experience at Jalopy School of Music was a positive one. The class size was small(3 students) and that felt perfect for a beginner group. We had a great instructor, Kyle M. I still have a long way to go on my guitar journey and I felt like this was a good 1st step for me.
  • This was so fun! I brought my friend and we love to do arts projects. We brought our own beer and had a great time. There was not a lot of time to sip our beer during the class but that’s because we were very focused on the artwork. If you are a little unfamiliar with painting I would say the pace of the instruction may be a little fast. But I am already excited to come back.
  • My one-on-one makeup lesson with Lorin Cole was wonderful. She and I talked in advance about what I hoped to learn, and she created a session that met my goals perfectly. I left knowing how to update my look and what I needed in terms of a few different products to achieve that look. We reviewed my current makeup, she created a detailed list of what I use where, and gave me directions in writing with colors and techniques to reinforced what she taught me in person. I have been able to do everything she taught me on my own. Lorin is a real professional. She is as a former model, a working makeup artist, and a fine artist, all of which she puts into her customized guidance. This course was truly everything I wanted, and more.
  • Great class Prof. Andres is awesome.

The Turkish language has a complex history dating back thousands of years and is an example of how languages evolve. Believed to have originated 2,500 years ago, the language in Turkey first emerged in the Ottoman Empire. As many as 80 million people worldwide claim Turkish as their primary language and several million more speak it as their secondary, making it one of the most significant languages in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia.

Fluency in Turkish is not limited to the residents of Turkey itself. Turkish is the official language of Turkey and Cyprus, but many people in Germany, Bulgaria, France, the Netherlands, and other countries speak it. Originally written in the Arabic alphabet, Turkish officially transitioned to the Latin alphabet in 1928 to increase literacy and bring the language (and country) into the modern era. Turkish can claim influence from both the Romance languages and the Semitic languages, making it a unique foreign language for anyone to learn.

If you’re looking to learn to speak Turkish, then CourseHorse can help. Studying a new language can be challenging but with the right class environment, passion, and determination, anyone can learn to speak Turkish quickly.

Why You Should Learn Turkish

One of the primary reasons people want to learn Turkish is to plug into their local Turkish community. According to the Turkish Coalition of America, only around 350,000 Americans of Turkish descent live in the United States. However, the majority are in New York and California. That means that most Turkish speakers live in major metropolitan areas.

Additionally, Americans of Turkic descent comprise another 500,000 or so, including Americans of Uzbek, Kazakh, and Azerbaijani descent. Many of these descendants speak Turkish, too, but among those who do not, their native languages provide solid foundations for learning Turkish.

If you want to learn Turkish as a hobby, this language can help you connect with others of Turkic descent or who learned the language for similar reasons. There are many professional and cultural organizations for those interested in the language. You can learn more by contacting the Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA), Federation of Turkish American Associations (FTAA), or Turkic American Alliance.

5 Ways to Learn Turkish

There are many ways to learn a new foreign language. In today’s technologically-advanced world, you can learn Turkish on a variety of platforms. Below is a list of the top five ways to learn Turkish as well as their pros and cons.

  1. In-person classes: Learning Turkish in a traditional classroom is one of the best, most effective ways to master this complex language. Most students who learn this way report a higher level of engagement with the materials than with other methods. Additionally, you also have the ability to ask questions and receive feedback immediately, and can practice your conversational skills with other students. Plus most supples, aside from textbooks, are provided for you. The more traditional structure of in-person classes may not fit well into your schedule if you work long or atypical hours, and you will need to commute to your classroom for each session.
  1. Online classes (live and on-demand): With an engagement level comparable to in-person learning, live online courses offer another great way to learn Turkish. On-demand classes allow you the most flexibility as you can stop and start whenever you need. Some foreign language learners even prefer virtual education, as it creates more accessibility for those who don’t live near in-person classes or can’t commute. You’ll be responsible for providing your own materials, like a computer, workbooks, textbooks, and headphones for audio training, but you can attend your class from the comfort of your home or anywhere you choose.
  1. On-demand or self-paced webinars or tutorials: Self-paced or on-demand webinars or tutorials differ from in-person and online courses in several ways. You can stop and start whenever you choose, just like on-demand classes, allowing you to take more time to master a particularly challenging lesson. They typically offer little or no interaction with instructors, and many are free or low-cost. Engagement and accountability are low or non-existent, so you will be responsible for maintaining your focus and commitment.
  1. Individual self-study: Although you can learn some basic Turkish skills by yourself—including through tutorials, books, language apps, or seminars—this is usually the most challenging way to learn. This approach requires a lot of personal accountability and no way to troubleshoot any challenges you could encounter while learning. It also requires more legwork from the student to research and source the best learning materials and find ways to assess your mastery.
  1. Cultural immersion: Immersing yourself in Turkish culture can supercharge your language skills, especially if you can do so in Turkey or another country with a Turkish-speaking population. Traveling to a foreign country or living near a Turkish community may not be accessible for most students, but cultural immersion can be a complimentary way to put into practice what you’ve learned in a traditional class environment. You can master Turkish in an in-person or online course and then visit a Turkish restaurant, shop, or cultural center to apply what you’ve learned.

While there are so many options to choose from, nothing will beat the structure, resourcing, and compiled knowledge of an in-person class with a qualified teacher. Check out some of the best Turkish courses below, including beginner, intermediate, and advanced.

In-Person Turkish Classes

As previously mentioned, in-person classes are the fastest and most efficient way to learn Turkish. Living in a multicultural world means that students across the United States have seemingly endless in-person classes available to them. Below is a collection of in-person classes fro coast to coast, but make sure to check the CourseHorse website often as new classes are added frequently.

Many language learners want to study as a fun hobby, but others learn languages like Turkish for business purposes. Adding Turkish to a resume or CV can benefit workers, especially in large metropolitan areas like New York City, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.. The government classifies Turkish as a critical language, and Turkey's strategic location—partly in Europe and partly in Asia—makes it an essential bridge between the two continents. Government jobs requiring Turkish may be in diplomacy and military intelligence, including language interpretation and instruction.

Some of the most popular schools that offer in-person Turkish training are in major metropolitan areas. The following schools may have upcoming courses scheduled for beginners.

  • Turkish ConneXion—Based in the Tribeca neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York, Turkish ConneXion provides in-person courses for all ages and levels. Their aptly-named Turkish Absolute Beginner 101 class is an adult ed program for students 18 and above. They keep class sizes small, with a maximum of nine students per class. Turkish Absolute Beginner 101 runs for two hours on Thursday evenings for eight sessions. Attendees learn everyday expressions and questions and how to describe daily activities and routines. Turkish ConneXion also offers elementary, intermediate, and advanced Turkish training and separate classes for children.
  • New York University—New York University (NYU) hosts Turkish Studies classes through its Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies Department. Their Elementary Turkish I class introduces students to modern written and spoken Turkish, so course materials include textual and audio. Additional programs include intermediate and advanced studies. NYU hosts classes at the Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies New York's Washington Square area.
  • Language Trainers- Outside New York and New Jersey, California has the nation's largest concentration of Turkish Americans. Language Trainers hosts in-person classes with native Turkish tutors in major metro areas like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Jose. Their course levels correspond with internationally-recognized standards: 30 hours to complete the Beginner Level, 150 hours for the Intermediate Level, and 400 hours for the Advanced Level. Among the many other cities in the U.S. and Canada where Language Trainers offer Turkish courses are:
  • New York City
  • Akron, OH
  • Charlotte, NC
  • Albuquerque, NM
  • Phoenix, AZ
  • Philadelphia, PA
  • Houston, TX
  • Berlitz—One of the oldest foreign language trainers in the world, Berlitz has offered language lessons since 1878. They offer training for children, teens, adults, and businesses. In-person Turkish options include group classes, private classes, and an intensive program called Total Immersion. The Berlitz language center locations include New York City, Washington, D.C., Princeton, NJ, and Orlando, FL.
  • International Language Institute—The International Language Institute (ILI) in Washington, D.C., offers multiple options for learning Turkish, including in-person. The Turkish Language Program is instructor-led, real-time training with five levels: Basic 1,2, and 3, and Intermediate 1 and 2. Instructors are native Turkish speakers, and the program integrates speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Some courses may be on a hybrid level where additional attendees learn online; however, classes are kept small, with a maximum of 12 students.

Virtual Turkish Classes

While in-person classes are known to be the most efficient way to learn, online training offers several of the same benefits. You still have access to expert instructors and a structured learning environment, but virtual classes also allow you to learn from the comfort of your own home (or wherever you choose), and can typically accommodate more difficult schedules. Plus, teachers can provide real-time feedback and students can still interact together in breakout sessions (in live online classes).

Below are just some of the best online Turkish classes, but make sure to check the listings on Coursehorse frequently as new classes are added often.

In Turkish 2 Fundamentals, Eva covers how to talk about vacation or business trip activities and discuss beverage likes and dislikes.

Average class sizes for Turkish Fundamentals are kept small, around four participants. Those attending should have an internet connection and administrator access on their desktop or laptop, a recorder or smartphone with recording capabilities, paper, and writing instruments.

What Will I Need to Learn Turkish?

One of the most appreciated benefits of learning Turkish is that you never need much in the way of materials. Basic supplies for learning Turkish may include:

  1. Language workbooks, textbooks, or audio recordings are the three most common resources when learning a foreign language. In-person classes will typically include most, if not all, of these.
  2. Notecards may be helpful for vocabulary comprehension, too. Many students find that making flashcards can help with memory and learning sentence structure and syntax.
  3. Online classes will require the use of a laptop or desktop computer, and in-person classes may as well.

Minimal supplies will keep your out-of-pocket costs low, making learning Turkish accessible for more people and allowing you to jump right into your education.

Is It Difficult to Learn Turkish?

Learning a foreign language, especially Turkish, can have a lot of challenges. An agglutinative structure is very different from the way English is structured and can take some time to get used to. Turkish consists of 29 letters, comparable to the 26-letter Latin alphabet used for English. Originally written with the Arabic alphabet, Turkey modernized the language with Latin in the 1920s.

The structure of Turkish is agglutinative, a process whereby a series of elements can join together to form a single word. The word “ev” means “house, ” -imiz means “our, ” and -de means “in.” The phrase “evlerimizde” means “in our houses, as "ler" indicates more than one. This structure is drastically different from English and can be challenging for native English speakers to master.

And while Turkish is spoken widely throughout the Middle East, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe, there are much fewer native speakers in the United States, meaning opportunities for language programs or immersion may be harder to find. In many regions, exposure to Turkish or Turkic culture is non-existent, so it may never even occur to some people to explore learning Turkish. Limited Turkish communities can also make it hard to practice your newly mastered skills as there won’t be any native speakers to engage in conversation with. But, for those with passion and determination, learning Turkish is ultimately accessible to everyone.
