This module represents the second in the Scent and Culture Series, an in-depth exploration of olfactory storytelling and its strategic applications in cultural institutions. This intensive course examines how scent can be intentionally designed and integrated into exhibitions, educational programming, and public experiences within GLAM environments, including galleries, libraries, archives, and museums. Through the combination of theoretical foundations and practical, hands-on applications, participants will develop the competencies needed to design, evaluate, and implement sophisticated olfactory storytelling strategies that meaningfully engage diverse audiences and enhance interpretation and understanding.
Module Objectives:
- Define olfactory storytelling as a practice and understand its specific applications within museum and cultural heritage contexts.
- Examine the significant benefits, potential challenges, and critical ethical considerations when incorporating scent into public-facing projects, including accessibility accommodations, cultural sensitivity, and comprehensive risk management strategies.
- Explore diverse olfactory storytelling formats and event design approaches suited to varying interpretive goals and target audiences.
- Identify and select scent diffusion methods and technologies based on specific spatial conditions, visitor flow patterns, and the desired sensory experience.
- Develop practical competencies in olfactory event management, encompassing scent procurement, proper storage, application techniques, and ongoing maintenance in public exhibition spaces.
- Apply real-world case studies and best practices to recognize effective olfactory interpretation strategies that generate meaningful audience engagement and measurable outcomes.
