Best Welding Classes in Los Angeles

Welding is a skill where you combine metal edges to create one solid piece. To weld, you’ll need a welding helmet (to protect your eyes and face from the flames), welding gloves, a MIG welder, and more. Because welding deals with open flames and hot metal, it’s recommended that you find a safe, brightly-lit workspace away from flammable materials.

If you want to learn how to weld, it’s best to take an in-person class or begin a welding apprenticeship. By learning to weld in a safe and supervised environment, you can learn the right techniques and safety procedures without the risk of hurting yourself or others. Course Horse offers several welding class options for those living in Los Angeles.

Why You Should Learn Welding in Los Angeles

There are several professions that require welding experience. So, if you’re interested in entering a welding profession, you’ll need to take a welding class to introduce yourself to the skill. For example, construction welders, ironworkers, plumbers and pipefitters, sheet metal workers, and machinery mechanics use welders as part of their day-to-day jobs. Beyond using welding as a career, there are several other reasons why you should consider learning to weld:

  • Having a unique hobby: Welding is an uncommon and interesting hobby. By learning to weld, you’re learning a hobby that few people have.
  • Learning a new and helpful skill: Welding is also a helpful skill to have. If a pipe breaks at home, you may be able to save money and fix it yourself.
  • Completing DIY projects around the home: If you know how to weld, you can create furniture, sculptures, and other DIY projects.
  • Meeting new people: When taking an in-person welding class, you’ll be able to meet new people who are interested in the same topics. You’ll connect to a larger community and join local clubs, groups, and events related to welding.

By learning to weld, you’re learning a valuable skill to help you in your daily life. To get the best learning experience, find an in-person class in your area on Course Horse.

In-Person Welding Classes in Los Angeles

Course Horse offers in-person classes through several well-known welding schools in Los Angeles. The most well-known welding school is Molten Metal Works, LLC. Here are some of the best welding classes in LA that Molten Metal Works has offered in the past.

Intro MIG Welding Class is taught in Glendale and has an average class size of seven people. During the six-hour class, you’ll learn the basics of welding using MIG welders. You’ll also learn how to create furniture, bicycle choppers, or top fuel dragster projects. During the workshop, the instructor will emphasize skills and techniques that make welding more accessible to those without previous experience, making this a great introduction to welding.

Molten Metal Works offers a class called Welding Taster. Rather than a fully intensive class, this fast three-hour workshop will give you a good sense of the basics of welding by teaching you how to make a cowbell. During the class, you’ll handle a 6,000° flame torch to bend and melt steel, a plasma cutter to cut steel, and a 12,000° electric arc MIG welder to weld everything together. Since you’ll be working with extremely hot materials, you must wear comfortable clothes, a long sleeve shirt made from 100% cotton or wool, long pants, and leather or canvas shoes. This is a great course to quickly learn the basics of welding.

If you already have a welding background but want to refresh and push your skills, consider taking Molten Metal Works’ three-day Advanced MIG class. During the three-day course, you’ll cover advanced MIG welding techniques, such as thick plate, flux core, and aluminum. You’ll also learn to do advanced filets on thin and thick, round and square tubes, and even weld tiny acute angles. You will need to have taken Intro MIG before you can sign up for this class.

Molten Metal Works offers a few furniture-making classes, including Wood & Metal Combo: Timber Beam Bench. This workshop includes two three-hour classes where you will build a beautiful bench that combines welding and woodworking. You will spend your first day building the wooden part of the bench at the Community Workshop. Then, you’ll move to Molten Metal Works to create a square leg frame and grind it to make it smooth. This class is open to beginners and is perfect for those interested in furniture making.

Another good furniture class is Make Furniture: Intermediate MIG. This class covers the basics of designing, jigging, and constructing welded steel furniture by building a dining room table, outdoor patio set, firepit, or other furniture set you’ve wanted to build. Over six weeks, you’ll work on your project with direct guidance from a professional welder.

Virtual Welding Classes

Welding isn’t offered as a remote class since it requires direct supervision. You’ll be working with intensely hot flames and hot metal, and you’ll need a properly ventilated room, equipment, and safety materials. Because you’ll need a professional studio to learn welding, Course Horse doesn’t currently offer online welding classes. Luckily, Course Horse offers some online classes that are similar to welding and teach great hands-on skills.

For example, you can take Jewelry Making Wax Addition Technique from the NYC Jewelry Lab by Carolina Iwanow. During this remote class, you’ll learn how to use the wax addition technique to create jewelry over five classes. Students will create rings, pendants, studs, hoops, coins, a bezel setting.

Another class option is the Hammered Earring (Virtual Private) course. For this 2.5-hour class, you’ll attend a live demonstration of how to make hammered earrings. The instructor will show you how to make a jump ring, how to forge, solder, and make findings for the earring and finishing. It’s a great private class that includes an open forum for questions and answers.

Private Group Welding Classes in Los Angeles

Businesses and organizations can find private group welding classes for Los Angeles businesses on Course Horse. By hosting a class for your group, you can facilitate group bonding, and help your team grow together. Depending on the class you choose, you can also teach your group new skills that can benefit them or help them relax as they learn a new hobby.

Course Horse offers several group classes that are similar to welding. For example, groups in NYC can take a Glass Etching Class. This two-hour workshop is open for up to 60 people and teaches the students how to create etchings for two glasses that the group members will be able to take home at the end of the class.

Another fun class is Virtual Clay Hand Building (Materials Included). During this online class, you’ll be led by a professional artist and instructor who will teach you how to create a planter or candle holder. The class uses air-dry clay, so you won’t need to fire the clay in a kiln. Before the start date of the class, the instructor will ship all of the required materials to your group members to ensure everyone can participate fully in the class.
