Job Opportunities & Salaries in the U.S.

Motion Graphics Designer – These designers create animated graphics and titles for media like commercials, explainer videos, and user interfaces. It’s a common role for someone with After Effects skills. The average salary for a motion graphics designer in the U.S. is around $75,000 – $80,000 per year (Glassdoor reports an average base salary about $70K, with totals often higher). Motion designers are in demand at creative agencies, television networks, and tech companies (for animated app/web visuals). As businesses increasingly use video and animation in marketing, motion graphics specialists find ample opportunities.
Special Effects Artist / Animator – This category includes VFX artists, 2D animators, and compositors who often use After Effects as part of their toolkit to create visual effects for film, TV, or video games. The median annual pay for special effects artists and animators is about $99,060 (May 2023). Jobs in this arena are growing at roughly 4% from 2023 to 2033, keeping pace with the average. These roles can range from creating the UI graphics seen in sci-fi movies, to animating lower-budget cartoon series, to designing effects for advertisements. After Effects classes can prepare you for entry-level roles in studios and production houses or help you freelance on projects requiring motion graphics and compositing.
Video Editor with VFX Skills – Some video editing jobs (mentioned in the Premiere Pro section) strongly prefer or require After Effects skills as well. For example, a video editor in a marketing team might also be expected to animate text or create simple motion graphics within their videos. While not a separate title, this hybrid skill set can command a higher salary than editing alone. Many job postings for video editors list motion graphics abilities as a plus. Therefore, adding After Effects to your repertoire can boost your earning potential and job prospects in the video production field. (For reference, recall that film/video editors median ~$65K; editors who can do motion graphics often position themselves toward the upper end of such ranges or beyond.)

(Job outlook: Motion graphics and VFX skills are highly valued in today’s digital content landscape. From streaming services needing eye-catching title sequences to corporations spicing up presentations with animation, the applications are broad. While some high-end VFX work concentrates in entertainment hubs, the rise of online video means even small companies are seeking talent to create animated logos, infographics, and social media effects. In short, if you know After Effects, you’ll find a growing niche of jobs and freelance gigs where you can apply those skills, and often at competitive salaries given the specialized nature of the work.)

Industries That Hire Professionals in This Field

After Effects skills open doors to a variety of industries:

Film and Television: VFX studios and post-production houses for movies and TV series hire compositors and motion graphic artists. Think of the animated title sequences of a series, or the on-screen graphics in news and sports broadcasts – many are made with After Effects. Also, TV networks often have in-house teams creating promotional motion graphics for shows.
Advertising and Marketing: Ad agencies produce commercials and digital ads that frequently require motion graphics (animated logos, kinetic typography, etc.). Marketing teams use motion graphics for product demos, social media content, and explainer videos. These industries regularly seek motion designers to make content more engaging.
Digital Media and Gaming: News websites, educational content creators, and video game studios need motion graphics for things like in-game interfaces or cutscene animations. Even podcasts and streaming shows now incorporate video elements (like animated overlays or intros) to enhance their brand – often created in After Effects. Software and tech companies also use motion graphics in app trailers or user onboarding videos.
Corporate and Finance (Communications): Many corporations, including those in finance and tech, hire designers to create internal training videos or sleek motion graphics for investor presentations and conferences. Industries like finance, which might seem old-school, actually use a lot of motion graphics to visualize data in marketing materials.
Freelance / Creative Studios: A significant number of After Effects experts work for motion design studios or as freelancers. They get contracted by various clients across industries – one week making animated infographics for a nonprofit, the next week creating lyric videos for a music artist. This gig economy means that if you have strong After Effects skills, you might work across multiple industries simultaneously.

Notably, special effects and animation roles (which involve After Effects) often cluster in entertainment hotspots like Los Angeles or New York, but with the ability to work remotely and increasing demand, you can find opportunities countrywide. Also, the top industries for special effects artists by pay include software publishing (think high-end graphics for tech or gaming) and motion picture/video industries, while advertising and computer design services also employ many in this field.

Key Tools, Features, and Topics Covered in Classes

After Effects is a deep program, and classes will break down its features in an approachable way:

Interface and Animation Basics: First, you’ll get comfortable with the After Effects interface – the Project panel (for assets), Composition panel (the canvas where you see your work), Timeline (for animating over time), and various tool panels. A crucial early concept is creating a Composition, which is like a canvas or scene. You’ll learn to import assets: images, videos, or Photoshop/Illustrator files, and organize them in layers on the timeline (similar to Photoshop layers, but now they can move over time). The hallmark of After Effects is keyframing – classes will teach you how to set keyframes on layer properties (like position, scale, rotation, opacity) to create animations. For example, you might set a layer’s position at point A at time 0, then at point B at 2 seconds; After Effects will interpolate a movement between those points. You’ll practice making simple animations like an object moving across the screen or fading in/out.
Working with Text and Shapes: After Effects is often used to animate text and vector shapes for titles and infographics. You’ll learn to use the Type tool to create text layers and then animate properties such as tracking (letter spacing), text opacity, or even use text animator presets that come with After Effects (like typewriter effects). Likewise, classes cover the Shape layer tools – you can create circles, rectangles, etc., directly and animate their properties (fill color, stroke, path shape over time). Many courses introduce masking here as well – using masks on layers to reveal or hide parts of your content (for example, making text appear from behind an object by animating a mask).
Effects and Presets: After Effects offers hundreds of effects (blurs, glows, distortions, particle generators, etc.). Classes will have you apply common effects to layers – for instance, add a Gaussian Blur to a background, or use Color Correction effects to tweak an image’s colors. You’ll likely experiment with keying effects (like chroma key for green screen removal) to learn compositing – taking a subject shot on green screen and placing them onto a new background, a common VFX task. Instructors will also showcase the Effects & Presets library, including many pre-built animations and behaviors you can apply and then adjust. One popular feature is the puppet tool, which allows you to place mesh points on an image (like a character) and animate it as if it’s a puppet – classes may include a fun segment on making a still image wave an arm or move in a simple way.
Motion Graphics Techniques: As you progress, the course will dive into more sophisticated motion graphics techniques. This includes understanding the Graph Editor to fine-tune the speed of animations (easing in/out keyframes for smoother motion rather than linear moves). You’ll also learn to use Pre-compositions (nesting comps within comps) to organize complex projects. Many classes teach parenting (linking layers so one follows another’s transformations) which is vital for things like rigging character joints or moving a group of elements together. Another advanced feature is Expressions – a bit of code to automate animations (e.g., making an object oscillate or follow another object). While coding isn’t always deeply covered, you might use simple expressions like wiggle() for random motion. Additionally, courses will cover using 3D layers and cameras: turning layers 3D allows you to move them in 3D space and add a virtual camera layer to create depth (like a camera push-through a scene of 3D layers).
Rendering and Exporting: Finally, you’ll learn how to export your work. After Effects projects usually render to intermediate files or are brought into Premiere, but you’ll practice using the Render Queue or Adobe Media Encoder to export your animations to video formats (like an MP4 or QuickTime movie) or an image sequence, depending on needs. Instructors will advise on settings for high quality vs. web compression.

Throughout the course, you’ll likely touch on real-world workflows, like how After Effects integrates with Photoshop/Illustrator (for example, importing a layered PSD or AI file and animating the layers), and how to manage your project so it remains organized (naming layers, using markers, etc.). By the end, you should be capable of creating both simple and complex animations, combining video with graphics, and adding effects that enhance the final output.

Types of Projects Students Will Work On

After Effects classes typically include creative projects that reinforce the software’s diverse uses:

Animated Logo or Title Sequence: A classic project is animating a logo or creating a title sequence. For example, you might take a company’s logo (provided as an Illustrator file with separate elements) and animate its pieces to assemble on screen – perhaps letters fly in or a shape draws itself. Or design a 5-second animated bumper for a YouTube channel, using text and shape layers with effects. This project teaches timing and use of motion for branding.
Kinetic Typography Video: In this project, you create an animation where the main focus is moving text (often synced to an audio clip or speech). For instance, animate a famous movie quote or a stanza of a poem: each word might appear with different animations (scaling up, spinning, fading, etc.) in a sequence that emphasizes the content. This hones skills in text animation, using easy ease for smooth motion, and coordinating visuals with audio.
Explainer Graphic/Infographic Animation: You might be tasked to animate a short infographic or explainer segment – something you’d see in an educational video or a news piece. For example, animate the growth of a bar chart or the filling of pie charts with relevant numbers popping up, or illustrate how a process works (arrows moving, icons appearing). This project would make heavy use of shape layers, masks, and perhaps parenting (linking parts of a graphic together), and teaches clarity in visual communication.
Green Screen Composite Scene: A project focused on visual effects could involve taking provided green screen footage of an actor and compositing them into a fantastical background. You would use a chroma key effect to remove the green screen, then layer the actor over a new environment, add color correction to match them to the scene, and perhaps add extra effects like lens flares or rain to make the composite believable. This gives a taste of film post-production work.
Motion Graphics Reel or Final Project: As a capstone, many classes ask students to create a short motion graphic video that incorporates multiple techniques learned. For instance, you might create a 15-second social media ad for a product, combining moving text, images, and a logo with dynamic transitions. Or a personal “animation reel” that shows various animations in one video. This final project is often open-ended for you to be creative and demonstrate mastery – you plan it out, design assets, animate them, and polish with effects.

By completing these projects, students build a small portfolio demonstrating different After Effects capabilities: text animation, infographics, compositing, and creative storytelling. The hands-on practice ensures you’ve tackled real scenarios, preparing you to handle similar tasks in professional projects or freelance gigs.
