In this 5 hour workshop, Mike will lead students through the process of painting digital landscape or still-life studies of locations from life, on site. Students will leave with a much clearer idea of how to approach painting observational studies with digital tools, and for how consistent practice can help hone their eye for color, light, and perspective.
Mike is an art director and designer with a background in game development. He’s done visual development on Spider-Verse at Sony Animation, Blue Eye Samurai at Netflix, and art directed a film adaptation of Charlie Mackesy’s book The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse for NoneMore Productions.
The workshop will include:
- A 20-minute presentation of Mike’s work and biography, with audience Q & A.
- A 30-minute lecture on process
- Mike will discuss WHY this process of research, sketching, and study collection is so useful and HOW it can be optimized for any artist’s practice.
- An 90-minute paint along
- Students will copy Mike as he demonstrates the production of an image.
- A 150-minute full painting
- Students will choose their own scene to observe and paint onsite and work on a finished painting, while Mike rotates around the class providing consistent guidance, critique, and answers.
