Come explore, build, and create at Design Hive's in-person Maker Space day camp. This session is designed for curious young minds who love tackling hands-on challenges, experimenting with materials, and making things that actually work. Set in our Los Angeles studio, the camp blends the spirit of a science lab with the creative energy of an art studio, producing an experience that is equal parts educational and exhilarating.
Campers engage with a dynamic combination of structured project work and exploratory making activities, covering everything from kinetic art and circuitry to game design, architecture, engineering challenges, and movement-based exercises. Every day brings new surprises, new materials, and new problems to solve.
What You'll Explore and Create:
- A rotating blend of project-based and exploratory activities spanning art, craft, engineering, and technology disciplines.
- Possible activities include kinetic art builds, introductory electronics and circuitry, game design scenarios, movement and spatial reasoning challenges, architectural model-making, and open-ended engineering projects.
An Important Note About Our Tools:
- Proper tool use is central to our philosophy. Campers use real tools: genuine hammers, nails, screws, and screwdrivers. Our studio relies on actual high-temperature hot glue guns, never cool-touch substitutes. We do not use protective hand-wear during tool work, because authentic hands-on experience builds both skill and confidence. The occasional minor burn or small bruise is accepted as a normal part of the making process.

Registering: What You Should Know First
Design Hive is a boutique process-art and STEM studio. We do not have a dedicated outdoor space, though movement, stretching, and dance are woven into each day. Our camp runs shorter than a typical school day and offers limited extended care options, a reflection of our studio's intimate size and focused approach. Our space is fully open plan, meaning there are no separate rooms for different age groups. This is a deliberate part of our design.
Campers spanning a wide age range work side by side, and our curriculum is intentionally scaffolded so that both younger and older students can engage meaningfully with every project. A child of six and a child of eleven can work on the same build in ways that challenge and reward each of them appropriately. Older students step into more complexity; younger ones are inspired and mentored by what they observe. Our founders bring over thirty years of combined teaching experience, and they have seen again and again that mixed-age environments produce some of the richest and most memorable learning experiences possible.
If you require age-segregated programming or a camp tailored to a narrowly defined skill or tech focus, please weigh that before registering. We do not issue refunds for camps.
