Manhattan Beach presents endless photographic possibilities, but capturing its full beauty requires guided exploration. Our experienced DPA instructor brings deep knowledge of this iconic location and sophisticated compositional expertise, ensuring that no worthwhile photographic opportunity goes unexamined.
Train your eye to observe in all directions. Elevate your vision by looking upward at the sky, downward toward the sand, forward toward the horizon, and backward toward the pier and surroundings. Your ideal composition might unfold beneath the pier's dramatic structure, or perhaps it will feature an architectural element rising through the water's surface, creating dynamic tension between foreground and main subject.
Environmental portraiture presents its own fascinating challenges. Learn the social and practical skills necessary for respectfully approaching people you've never met and requesting permission to photograph them. The instructor will share proven techniques for building rapport and making genuine human connections, while also preparing you for the learning opportunities that come with rejection and other unexpected outcomes.
As sunset arrives, exceptional light emerges that transforms ordinary scenes into compelling images. Your DPA instructor will guide you in adjusting your composition and camera settings to take full advantage of these golden conditions. Weather remains the ultimate variable in outdoor photography. When one approach encounters atmospheric obstacles, alternative strategies exist, and your instructor brings a toolkit of proven tactics for adapting to whatever conditions present themselves.
Equipment preparation: Bring your camera, smartphone, or any comfortable portable gear. Verify that all batteries are fully charged and memory cards or device storage contain adequate space. Dress appropriately for current weather conditions, and select comfortable footwear suitable for extended walking. A tripod would be beneficial for certain shots, though your instructor can suggest alternative stabilization methods for longer exposures.
The meeting point is located at the Manhattan Beach Pier entrance, directly across from the visible Lifeguard station along the Bike Path. For GPS navigation, note that parking is available at 100 Manhattan Beach Boulevard, with the meeting spot located just across the street from this lot.
Each Composition in the Field class begins with an introductory session led by one of our experienced instructors, followed by a guided exploration through one of many photogenic locations. The DPA network spans more than 20 cities and includes diverse environments such as street scenes, remarkable interiors, farmers' markets, botanical gardens, landscapes, and additional compelling subjects. Our collection includes photographs captured by both students and instructors across numerous venues throughout the United States and Canada.
Participants gain valuable experience in strategic image capture, develop improved compositional decision-making, and return home with fundamental skills for enhancing their photography, whether documenting travel adventures, capturing family gatherings, or photographing countless daily life moments.
