Class Description

Description

This 3-week online class will serve as a workout to keep your acting tools sharp for auditioning and working in episodics. Special attention will be paid to script analysis, character development and technical adjustments.

Kendra will also discuss any trends or changes we’re seeing in the current pilot season.

Each class will begin with a short lecture pointing out specifics of the sub-genres and formats we are working on.

Every week, each actor will get a chance to perform their scene, get verbal feedback and redirection from me, and do the scene again. All actors will watch the work of their classmates, so as to learn from each other.

EVENT OVERVIEW:

WEEK 1 - PROCEDURALS:

Discussion covering the following topics:

  • Kendra's casting background
  • What is a procedural?
  • The basics of script analysis (who, what, where, when, why?)
  • How to analyze the power dynamics in a scene
  • How to identify and highlight important facts
  • How to color the story with your point of view
  • How does your role fit into the larger story?
  • The importance of wardrobe/hair/make-up choices

Scenework: Guest Star scenes from Procedurals. A collection of sides will be sent out at least 24 hours prior to class and actor will be able to choose which scene they wish to work on.

WEEK 2 – SERIALIZED DRAMAS & PRIMETIME SOAPS:

Discussion covering the following topics:

  • The importance of defining relationships
  • Finding clues within the script to your character’s history
  • Defending your character
  • Living in the moment
  • Feeling and conveying confidence in the audition room

Scenework: Guest Star scenes from Serialized Dramas and Primetime Soaps. A collection of sides will be sent out at least 24 hours prior to class and actor will be able to choose which scene they wish to work on.

WEEK 3 – COMEDY:

Discussion covering the following topics:

  • The importance of identifying comedic tone
  • Pace, pace, pace
  • Finding your quirk
  • Sticking to the script, while still making it your own

Scenework: Guest Star scenes from Comedies. A collection of sides will be sent out at least 24 hours prior to class and actor will be able to choose which scene to self-tape. Written feedback will be provided no more than 48 hours following.

You'll have an opportunity at the end of each class to ask questions, so as to address specific concerns and gain further understanding of the day’s lesson.

The host will open the ‘room’ at least 30 minutes before the start of each class. You’re welcome to arrive during this time to run your scene with the host.

NOTE: This class is for actors 18+ (no minors). It is required that actors who sign up for this class be able to attend all weeks.

This class is a learning experience. It is not an audition or employment opportunity. As such, when this class is over, Kendra will NOT be taking home, nor be given access to your headshot, resume, or any of your promotional materials.

Remote Learning

This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.

Upon registration, the instructor will send along additional information about how to log-on and participate in the class.

School Notes:
