Description

What you'll learn in this lecture class:

Full Course Title: What is the relationship between our inner lives and the spaces we inhabit?

In this first session, we will explore the foundational work The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard. Bachelard's work provides an excellent starting point for our exploration, as it delves into the ways in which our surroundings impact our personal identity and emotions. The philosophical concepts introduced in this book will lay the groundwork for the rest of the series, while also standing as a valuable and thought-provoking session on its own.

Through the lens of Bachelard's work, we will discuss the intimate relationship between our inner selves and the spaces we inhabit. We will explore the concept of "home" as a central aspect of personal identity and how it shapes our sense of belonging, safety, and connection to others. Additionally, we will examine the ways in which different types of spaces, such as urban or rural environments, can influence our perceptions, behavior, and sense of self.

Readings for this class:

The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard: In this seminal work, Bachelard delves into the emotional and philosophical significance of the spaces we inhabit, from the intimacy of our homes to the broader environment. He examines the impact of these spaces on our personal identity, emotions, and relationships with others, providing a foundational understanding of the connection between place and self.

Core questions for this class:

  1. How does the concept of "home" influence our personal identity and sense of self?
  2. In what ways do the spaces we inhabit shape our emotions, memories, and relationships with others?
  3. How do different types of environments (urban, rural, natural, etc.) impact our perceptions, behavior, and identity?
  4. What role does our cultural background play in shaping our relationship with and understanding of the spaces we inhabit?
  5. How can we apply the insights from "The Poetics of Space" to better understand our own experiences of place and identity?
