Discover the Best Seafood Classes in Los Angeles

With roughly 840 miles of Pacific Ocean coastline, California has some of the most mouthwatering seafood in the world. Whether sinking your teeth into some succulent mahi-mahi tacos on the beach or savoring buttered lobster at a fine dining restaurant, there’s seafood for almost anyone’s tastes in California. With this varied and diverse seafood culture, LA provides an accessible environment for learning how to cook seafood as well. After taking some of LA’s seafood classes, you’ll be in a position to start saving money by cooking at home and also be able to impress friends and family with plenty of seafood dishes.

Why You Should Learn Seafood in Los Angeles

Eating seafood has plenty of health benefits, but many people don’t take advantage of these by excluding seafood from their diets. It’s recommended that people eat seafood at least twice a week, but only about one in five Americans abide by that counsel. Luckily, it couldn’t be easier for Californians to reap these health benefits and increase their seafood intake if needed. The entire Pacific Ocean is LA’s backyard, and with so many seafood options, any prospective home cook or aspiring chef will be spoiled for choice in deciding where to start and what to learn.

Because so many in LA have experience with or opinions about seafood, learning to make your own gives you great inside knowledge for conversation starters. You’ll feel more ingrained in the larger community of seafood chefs and enjoyers than you ever have previously, and being able to impress friends, coworkers, and partners with your seafood skills and knowledge certainly won’t hurt. If you decide down the road you might want to get involved as a restaurant or food truck cook, then taking a seafood class in LA will boost your chances and qualifications as well. Regardless of how far you want to take a seafood hobby, there’s something in it for everyone when taking a class.

In-Person Seafood Classes in Los Angeles

In-person classes generally offer a learning environment with great energy, experienced instructors, and a community of other interested participants to share the journey with. In LA, there’s no shortage of excellent seafood classes to take for any cook at any level.

BLVD. Kitchen’s Sashimi and Crudo Class in Sherman Oaks is for all those who want to enter the world of making seafood dishes without needing to turn on a stove, grill, or oven. This class will cover everything from sourcing your own fish and other ingredients to making the perfect slices. Participants will also practice plating their fish with immaculate precision. This is a great introductory seafood course, with many of the skills honed in sourcing and knife work transferring easily to the preparation of cooked seafood dishes.

For those who have visited Spain or have always wanted to, you can get a taste of Spanish flavors in this Paella Española Class from CocuSocial Cooking Classes in Long Beach. No prior cooking experience is required, but you’ll walk away with experience cooking three types of seafood in a single dish. All equipment and ingredients will be provided, and the good news is that California markets have all the ingredients you’ll need to make paella again at home.

If Mexican cooking is more up your alley, you can head to the Fairfax District for Sur La Table – LA’s Fresh & Healthy Mexican Class. You’ll get hands-on experience making lime-marinated grilled shrimp along with some other delicious fare: shredded chicken sopes with tomatillo sauce, creamy black beans, an avocado and jicama orange salad, and a pineapple-lime sorbet. The class will also emphasize practicing knife skills and even teach participants how to make masa cakes from scratch.

BLVD. Kitchen’s Phenomenal Asian Soups Class in Sherman Oaks is for those who want a variety of recipes from their classes. Cooks of all levels are welcome, and in addition to a stunning, sizzling seafood soup, participants will also try their hands at miso soup, hot and sour soup, and Thai coconut chicken soup.

For those who feel uncomfortable with even basic cooking skills, consider this Knife Skills Class from Chef Eric’s Culinary Classroom in West LA. You’ll learn all the kitchen knife basics, including how to properly hold your knife, choose the right knife for the job, and sharpen and care for each of your knives so they last as long as possible. Once participants learn how to chop, dice, slice, and julienne effectively, they’ll get time to learn how to do more advanced cutting techniques. While the class uses whole chickens and vegetables to teach cutting techniques, much of what you’ll learn will translate very easily to making seafood in the kitchen.

If you’re confident that a career in cooking is in your future, try your hand with the Master Chef Program - 12-Week Class, also from Chef Eric’s Culinary Classroom in West LA. This course offers a very holistic approach to cooking. In addition to seafood knowledge, you’ll have entire classes dedicated to knife skills, stocks and sauces, appetizers, breakfast cooking, heat methods for cooking, vegetables, and more. Students of this course have gone on to have jobs in the restaurant industry, so the Master Chef Program certificate you’ll earn at the end of the course will be a great addition to any resume.

Virtual Seafood Classes

While there’s no shortage of great in-person courses in LA and the surrounding area, sometimes people just don’t want to deal with the hectic LA traffic. The good news is there’s a plethora of online seafood classes that allow you to attend from anywhere, including from the familiar space of your own kitchen. For many people, having to source their own ingredients and tools is worth it because of these added conveniences.

If you want to learn some shellfish basics, check out BLVD. Kitchen’s Cooking Shellfish: Seared Scallops & Shrimps Class. This beginner-friendly course will focus on helping you make delicious pan-seared scallops with caper butter as well as spicy Thai-inspired shrimp. For participants who are worried about tackling too much in a single class, the option is available to tackle just one dish. A class handout with all recipes, ingredients, and necessary supplies will be emailed to participants shortly after signing up.

BLVD. Kitchen also hosts this Dinner in 30: Shrimp Tacos Class online. If you’re pressed for time, this course will have you making tasty “south-of-the-border” shrimp tacos with mango salsa in thirty minutes or less. An email with all necessary supplies will be sent out to participants after signing up, but know the meal promises to be simple and shouldn’t require much time at a grocery store before class.
