Why Learn Animation ?

Animation Is Everywhere – Learn the Craft: From the latest Pixar films to mobile game graphics and eye-catching motion graphics in ads, animation skills are in high demand. Attending animation classes near you can kick-start a career in this creative field by teaching you the principles and software behind moving imagery. Formal classes provide a structured path from fundamentals to advanced techniques and allow students to gain hands-on experience with different styles of animation. This is all done under the guidance of experienced instructors. You’ll not only learn how to bring images to life but also build a portfolio that showcases your range as an animator.

Explore 2D, 3D, and Motion Graphics: Animation classes typically cover a spectrum of styles. In 2D animation, you’ll start with traditional principles like squash-and-stretch, timing, and keyframing. Beginners often practice by drawing simple frame-by-frame animations (digital or hand-drawn) to understand how sequential images create motion. You may use software like Adobe Animate or Toon Boom Harmony for digital 2D animation, learning how to create key poses and in-between frames (tweens). In contrast, 3D animation training introduces you to working in a three-dimensional space using industry-standard software. Early on, you’ll manipulate basic 3D models, learning to set keyframes for their position/rotation to animate them. As you advance, you delve into rigging, character animation, and even 3D physics simulations. Motion graphics is another branch you’ll encounter – this style focuses on animating graphic elements and text, often for advertising or video content. Using tools like Adobe After Effects, you’ll create things like kinetic typography, logo animations, or infographic videos. By experiencing all three areas – 2D hand-drawn style, 3D CGI, and motion design – you can discover your passion and develop a versatile skill set. Many programs let you specialize later, but a well-rounded class will ensure you grasp the essentials of each style.

Animation Career Paths and Opportunities

One of the big motivations to attend animation classes is to pursue exciting career opportunities. Skilled animators find roles in various industries, often with impressive salaries. For example, Character Animators bring characters to life in films, TV shows, or games – crafting their movements and acting. Visual Effects (VFX) Artists focus on creating realistic effects and composites (like explosions, magical effects, or CG creatures) typically for film and television. Motion Designers produce animated graphics for advertisements, social media, and user interfaces – blending design and animation to communicate messages. In the gaming industry, Game Animators create the movement for characters and objects within video games, ensuring gameplay feels fluid and believable. There are also niche roles like 3D Modelers and Rigging Artists (who might start as animation students and then specialize in building the assets and skeletal rigs that animators use) – but generally, animation training opens the door to any role involved in the animation pipeline. Not only are these roles creatively fulfilling, they are also well-compensated. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, special effects artists and animators (a category encompassing many of these roles) earn a median annual wage around $99,060. Specialists in certain industries can earn even more – animators working in the motion picture industry have median salaries around $109,320, and those in software/game development average about $110,340.
Even motion designers in advertising command a healthy median wage (~$83,360 in ad agencies). These figures highlight that careers in animation can be financially rewarding. Beyond salary, the job outlook is positive – animation and VFX jobs are projected to grow as demand for digital content, video games, and immersive media continues. Studios, game developers, advertising agencies, and even sectors like education and medical visualization are hiring animators to create engaging content. Animation classes teach both artistic technique and software skills – from sketching keyframes to using graphics tablets and advanced software tools.

What You’ll Learn (Beginner to Advanced)

Animation classes start by building a strong foundation in art and technology. As a beginner, you’ll learn the fundamentals of animation – often referred to as the 12 Principles of Animation (developed by Disney animators), which include crucial concepts like anticipation, timing, and exaggeration. Early coursework might have you create simple flipbook-style animations or basic digital animations to apply these principles. You’ll also get introduced to the software environment: for 2D, understanding layers and onion-skinning in an animation program; for 3D, navigating the 3D viewport, manipulating objects, and using the timeline. A hallmark of early training is keyframe animation – you’ll practice setting keyframes (important poses or states) and letting the software interpolate the in-between frames, a core technique in both 2D digital and 3D animation.

As the class progresses, you’ll tackle more complex skills. In 3D animation, a major topic is rigging – learning how character rigs work, and even creating simple rigs, so that a static 3D model can move naturally at joints. You’ll explore 3D modeling and texturing to better understand how animated assets are created (some programs include a module on modeling characters or environments, which deepens your overall 3D knowledge even if your focus is animation). In compositing and VFX-oriented portions, you learn how to combine rendered animation with other elements, do green-screen keying, or add particle effects – for instance, using After Effects or compositing software to integrate animated layers into a final scene. On the 2D side, advanced lessons may include character design and frame-by-frame animation for complex motions that can’t be achieved with simple tweening – for example, animating a character performing a unique action by drawing each frame.

You’ll also learn efficiency techniques like using symbol libraries, puppet rigs, or inverse kinematics in 2D tools to animate faster. Motion graphics modules will teach you to animate infographics, create smooth transitions, and use expressions or scripting for dynamic effects. By the end of an advanced animation course, students often have experience with the entire production pipeline: storyboarding an idea, creating or importing assets, animating them, adding sound effects or music, and exporting the final animation. This comprehensive skill set mirrors real-world animation workflows.

Hands-On Projects and Portfolio

Animation classes are very project-centric – you will build a portfolio of animations that demonstrate your abilities to employers. For a 2D focus, you might create a short hand-drawn animated film or scene (for example, a 30-second cartoon snippet featuring a character you designed). This project would involve developing a simple storyboard, sketching key poses, then producing a cleaned-up animation with color. In a 3D animation track, a capstone project could be an animated short in 3D: you might animate a pre-modeled character performing a pantomime or interacting in a short story. This entails applying acting skills in animation – conveying emotion through the character’s movements and expressions – and then rendering the scene with lighting and camera work learned in class.

If you’re inclined toward motion graphics, you may produce an animated promotional video or title sequence for a fictitious brand, integrating moving text, logos, and graphical elements synced to music or voice-over. Other possible projects include game animation demos – e.g. animating a game character’s walk, run, and jump cycles and showing them in a game engine context – or visual effects reels where you composite fantastical elements onto live-action footage (such as adding an explosion or magical particles to a video, showcasing your VFX animation skills). Throughout these projects, instructors emphasize professional workflows: you’ll learn to critique your work, refine the timing and fluidity of motion, and ensure the final output is polished. By graduation, you could have a small demo reel containing highlights of your best animations (clips from your projects edited together), as well as full project files to show. This portfolio is crucial for job hunting, as studios and clients will want to see your animation in action.
