What you'll learn in this digital photography class:

This course focuses on the foundations of photography and the various ways to use a digital camera. Students examine how to choose and shoot subjects that are both personally meaningful in content and contemporary in context. Instruction includes capturing and printing images in both black and white and color, and investigating digital photo editing.

Discussions on the history of photography and individual and group critiques are included.

Students must provide their own digital SLR (single-lens reflex) camera with manual functions; no point-and-shoot cameras.

A leader in educating artists, designers, and scholars since 1866, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) offers nationally accredited degree programs as well as Continuing Studies programs for adults and children, ages 4-18. Considered one of the most influential art and design schools in the world, SAIC has continuing studies programs available to all skill levels. Students develop their creative and critical abilities while working with renowned faculty, utilizing state-of-the-art resources, and visiting the breath-taking galleries at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Question from anonymous
Do you need to know the basics of your camera before joining?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! Only for the introduction class would you not need to know the basics, but any other photography class it would be required to know camera basics.
Question from Anonymous
If I'm unable to attend some of the set sessions, is there a way to make it up?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! The school does not offer to make up classes but students are encouraged to keep in contact with the instructors so students can keep up with school work missed. Hope this helps!
Question from JO
Am I able to bring a mirrorless camera instead of my SLR?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Jo! DSLR is required for this class.
Answer from anonymous
Don't see why a mirrorless wouldn't be acceptable as almost anything you can do with a Dslr can be done with a mirrorless camera and there are plenty of comparable lenses
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hello there! A mirrorless camera will work fine for this course. The school list DSLR because many students entering the introductory level class will not necessarily know what a mirrorless camera is. They do not want them to mistake the requirement for a point and shoot camera, which would not be adequate. But you can use a mirrorless camera for this class. Hope this helps!
