Originally designed in 1907 as what Chicago's West Side residents called their "Pleasure Ground," Garfield Park Conservatory remains one of the most magnificent spaces in the city. It is equally captivating in the dead of winter, radiating warmth and lush color against the cold, as it is in full seasonal bloom. If you dare the winter chill, begin your photographic exploration on the exterior glass structure, which offers a wealth of patterns, geometric shapes, and reflections.
Inside, your Digital Photo Academy instructor will share techniques for steadying your camera without a tripod so you can capture the indoor waterfall effectively. Point your lens in any direction across the soaring growing rooms to document the saturated hues of an extraordinary variety of flora. Let your creative instincts guide you through the Desert Room, where the striking forms of countless cacti invite imaginative abstract compositions.
Each Composition in the Field class begins with a brief talk from one of our experienced instructors, followed by a guided walk through a carefully selected photogenic location from the DPA's network of more than 20 cities across the US and Canada. Subject matter spans street photography, magnificent interiors, farmers' markets, zoos, and landscapes. Sample images from students and instructors across many venues and cities are included as reference.
You will spend three hours shooting more strategically, build a stronger photographic eye, and leave with a foundation for improving your work in any situation, whether on a road trip, at a celebration, or exploring a place you have never photographed before.
