From the 3 tango genres Milonga is probably the most difficult one. The speed of the music and the misinterpretation of cadencia makes it almost impossible to lead or follow for those uninitiated. Just like we spend about 2 years learning basics of tango to finally feel comfortable Milonga requires just the same attention. We will spend about 2 months discussing Milonga fundamentals such us: musicality (time, double time, syncope), cadencia characteristic for Milonga rhythm, difference between Milonga lisa and traspie, characteristics of traspie with exercises just to mention most important topics.
After that we can start working on circular movements and tricky intricate steps and combinations so characteristic for Milonga.
WHAT'S THE PURPOSE OF CLOSED MILONGA CLASS?
Most people that start dancing Tango don't know that the Tango has 3 different musics: Tango, Milonga and Vals. Some simply don't hear the music and don't even realize that the music is different. Some know it's a different dance but since there is not many possibilities to learn it they simply dance 'fast tango'.
However - the mood of the Milonga, its cadencia, the steps, the figures are different from Tango though the principles of Tango like directions, rotations, lead, connection still apply - even more, since the dance is faster.
We attempted to organize few Milonga workshops before and some of you even took them. The problem is, that we usually cannot pass beyond basics. This class is to pass the 'basic Milonga' point and create a group of dancers - Leaders and Followers - who really feel Milonga music, understand Milonga music and can dance it. Truly dance it.
You might be 'in Tango' for 10 years and you might have never truly danced Milonga. There is always a very rewarding for us moment in the Milonga classes when one of you would come over and say - I got it, I FEEL I'm dancing Milonga! I got it!
