Class Description

Description

The Writer's Mind is an intensive program conducted over a condensed timeframe: one day in New York City, two days via Zoom, or three weeks for online participants. The course blends lectures with hands-on writing exercises and welcomes writers at all skill levels. A detailed syllabus is available further down this page.

Where do your best story ideas, character concepts, and original thoughts originate? Your mind holds the answer, yet most writers remain unaware of the mental techniques and capabilities available to them. This course guides you through unexpected explorations of your cognitive processes, helping you unlock deeper creativity, richer character development, and more innovative narrative solutions while making the writing journey itself more enjoyable.

This course differs from traditional writing instruction by focusing on how you think rather than just what you write. It emphasizes that your most important creative work often occurs away from the keyboard, in the spaces where your unconscious mind processes stories and ideas.

Course Details:

This cross-genre course applies to any writing discipline, from fiction to creative nonfiction to screenwriting. Components include lectures and writing exercises designed to expand your creative capacity.

  • If you need to withdraw after your class has started (or two business days before it starts), you won’t receive a refund, but you’re welcome to a Gotham credit less the price of Week 1 and your $25 registration fee, but we need to hear from you three business days or more before Week 2 meets for that to happen. After that point, no credits are available.

One-day and Zoom Intensives:

  • You may reschedule a One-day or Zoom Intensive one time, if you notify us two business days before the class begins. After that first reschedule, there is a $25 rescheduling fee.
  • If you notify us three business days or more before your class begins, rescheduling is free. If you notify us less than three business days before your class begins, there is a $25 rescheduling fee. If you don’t notify us until after your class begins, we cannot reschedule you.
  • You may get a refund (minus a $50 fee) if you notify us three business days or more before your class begins.

Write-Ins:

  • If you withdraw 1 business day or more before it begins, you’re welcome to a full credit good for one year toward another Write-In. No refunds are available.
  • If you simply don’t show up and don’t notify us in advance, you forfeit your money.

A few more things:

  • Credits are valid for one year and cannot be changed into refunds down the road.
  • Simply not attending class or notifying the instructor does not mean you've officially withdrawn.
  • Some exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis for medical emergencies with a doctor's note.
  • Refunds take up to six weeks to process.

Please understand, we can't issue a refund after classes have started, even if you miss your first class. Similarly, we can't offer you a credit one day before your second class or after that. We understand that other obligations get in the way of attending class, but these policies allow us to get other interested writers into class early enough to have a good experience, and this allows us to offer our classes at a reasonable price.

Important Notes:

  • Students are allowed to join a class in the second week.
  • Only those who pay the tuition in full can be guaranteed a place in class.
  • Class dates and times may be subject to change. A substitute may be assigned or make-up classes added to the end of the term.
  • Auditing and the recording of classes are not allowed.
  • For all classes, students receive a record of payment and registration.
  • Gotham reserves the right to remove any student at our discretion.
  • Gotham does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, disability, socioeconomic status, national or ethnic origin, sexual orientation, age, or marital status.
  • Our courses are not intended to provide instruction that will result in the student's acquisition of occupational skills.

In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.

While the instructor was awesome, the class itself was a joke. This is for people who are learning English for the first time - NOT - for writers or professionals of any kind. While this class was marketed as a great "refresher" for anyone, it is absolutely not. We learned what a noun was, how to capitalize words at the beginning of sentences, when to use question marks, etc. Honestly, if you graduated middle school, you will not gain anything from this class. Definitely do not waste your money!

Instructor was incredibly knowledgable, patient, and a great teacher. She also showed a lot of enthusiasm for the material, which kept the class moving at a great and engaging pace

This was pure torture. The class was way too long, I honestly was not learning after 3:00 PM. As I was beyond bored and the majority of the class was falling asleep. I would never do one of these again. Ever! This grammar course gave me a lot of anxiety- I mean to be secluded with 15 other adults reading out of a colorless boring booklet- that specifically I can do on my own. I was expecting the teaching to be more modern -perhaps some videos, colorful handouts- anything to make it more interactive, interesting. ...Class breaks were very short- I would suggest 15 min instead of 10 min breaks. Thank you- I do realized I need so much more than just a single grammar class.

The professor had great energy and provided tips going forward. I would love to the take the part 2, but I can’t afford it.

The instructor was very nice and knowledgeable. The class was very detailed and I learned a lot. The class reminded me of my high school grammar class.
  • The Writer’s Mind (Online)

The instructor's extensive knowledge of grammar was impressive. She gave detailed explanations on the uses of grammar in sentences and modeled how to break down each sentence to find the different parts of speech. Punctuation's and its uses reviewed. After each discussion, students were given the opportunity to correct various grammatical errors with sentence structures, as well as, punctuation errors. Feedback was given with additional examples. The atmosphere in class was congenial.
