Los Angeles Center of Photography See all classes by this school

This is a contact print process, and you will need negatives the size you would like your final image to be. We will start...

Class Description

Description

In 8 classes over 16 weeks, this course will investigate the shared language between photobooks and cinema, and explore what one form can teach us about the other. A handful of films (fiction and non-fiction, features and shorts) will be assigned to watch outside of class, and then sessions will be used to further dissect these films in terms of their narrative structure, editing techniques and directorial approach. Through analyses, readings, conversations and case-studies, our cinematic findings will lead us back to photobooks, ultimately culminating in a direct application to student’s own book projects. We will emerge with a more refined understanding of the structural foundations of visual storytelling, and a more expansive way of thinking about image progression and juxtaposition.

Note: Prospective students should have a photobook project in progress, or an interest in working with a specific archive. Open to projects at any stage.

A minimum of three students is required for all courses to run.

Remote Learning

This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.

Upon registration, the instructor will send along additional information about how to log-on and participate in the class.

Refund Policy

  • In the event a student must cancel their registration for a workshop, they may do so any time before and up to 15 business days prior to the workshop start date, and will receive an 85% refund.
  • In the event a student must cancel attendance from a workshop within 15 business days prior to the start of the workshop this will be considered a withdrawal and the student will receive a 50% refund.
  • A withdrawal made within 4 business days of a class will NOT be entitled to any refund.

Please provide us with as much advance notice as possible for consideration. Beyond this, we cannot be held responsible for any cancellations outside of our control.

We are not responsible for any non-refundable travel costs (such as airfare, train tickets or accommodation costs). If you are traveling long distances or from out of state, we advise you to consider purchasing travel insurance as workshops may be cancelled or postponed due to low registration or other unforeseen circumstances.

Due to the intensive nature of our workshops, we cannot offer makeup sessions outside of workshop time or in future workshops. Instructors are not required to bring students up to date during scheduled workshop time for missed days or lateness.

Refunds will not be given for absences or no shows. *This includes any illness or absence related to Covid 19.
