If you’re a writer looking to learn more about incorporating perspective, point of view, and narrative distance into your work, then this class is for you.
In this writing workshop, you’ll explore a range of options available to you focused on using perspective and point of view in your writing. We’ll read published stories by Anton Chekhov, Tobias Wolff, Carolyn Ferrell, Jennine Capo Crucet, and more.
We’ll engage in a variety of exercises in first, second, and third person point of view, explore the concept of “psychic” or “narrative” distance, and learn how to smoothly transition from one point of view to another without the dreaded horror of “head hopping.”
This class is ideal for writers who already have a basic familiarity with character, plot, and setting or landscape. In the final class, we will exchange short story drafts for peer feedback; you’ll also receive feedback from the instructor.

If the seminar fails to reach a minimum of seven registrations before the early registration deadline (one week before the first day of the term), the seminar will be canceled and all participants will be refunded less a 5% non-refundable registration fee. The instructor is required to teach the seminar if it reaches seven registrations prior to the early registration deadline. In some cases, a seminar may be offered with fewer than seven registrations at the option of the instructor.
