There are many steps to the weaving process. Individuals must prepare the warp by measuring it and winding it onto a beam, threading threads through the loom’s heddles and reed, and then weaving the weft through the warp. Many techniques can be used to create different designs while weaving.

In-Person Weaving Classes in

Tapestry is a course offered by The Art League in Alexandria. It is located at 105 North Union St between King and Cameron Streets. Although it isn’t currently scheduled, individuals can save it to their wish list to determine when it returns. It is for all skill levels and introduces basic and intermediate Gobelin tapestry weaving techniques. Individuals create a miniature woven tapestry on a small frame loom. 

Another course individuals can save to their wish lists is Woven Fabric Basket, offered by Capital Quilts in Gaithersburg. Individuals aged 18 and older use a plastic needle, strips of fabric, and clothesline, to weave together their baskets. No sewing machine is required for this course. 

Virtual Weaving Classes 

Those who prefer to learn to weave from the comfort of their own homes or offices can enroll in virtual weaving classes. Individuals can learn from anywhere and don’t have to worry about commuting to class. Although materials will not be provided, instructors provide the lists of necessary supplies well ahead of time. 

Although there aren’t currently any virtual classes specifically related to weaving, other related classes are available, such as Sewing 101 Basics. The course is meant for beginners, and the only thing needed to join is a reliable internet connection. Individuals go back to the basics and learn how to sew step-by-step. They master all of the necessary sewing terminology and equipment and how to choose suitable fabric for a garment. 

Home Sewing Bootcamp is designed to introduce or reintroduce individuals to their home sewing machines. It focuses on project-based exercises allowing them to gain mastery in essential sewing machine techniques. It covers fundamental concepts and allows individuals to apply them by constructing a tote bag and creating a pair of drawstring shorts or pants. The course welcomes beginners, making it suitable for those with little sewing experience. 

Private Group Weaving Classes in

Private group weaving classes are live online and allow groups to learn in an intimate setting. There is more personalized attention and individualized feedback, ensuring that the needs of all members of the group are addressed. Weaving in a group setting promotes a sense of community among participants, and group members can learn from each other and collaborate on projects.

Virtual Tapestry Loom Weaving is a course through which individuals learn to add contemporary elements to a centuries-old tradition and bring their tapestry-weaving dreams to life. They work with three types of yarn and learn different ways to add texture and flair. Key skills taught include making a DIY loom from a chipboard, setting up the warp thread on a loom, and adding fringes to a design.


Virtual Macrame Workshop provides individuals with the materials needed to learn how to create plant hangers. The course teaches how to create beautifully patterned textiles and customize designs. Individuals walk away with a beautiful plant hanger.
