Attending an in-person class in is an effective way to learn how to hand embroider. In-person classes provide individuals with hands-on instruction and the opportunity to connect with other embroiderers and fiber artists. 

Capital Quilts offers Wool Embroidery Club for all skill levels ages 18 and older to learn new stitches and techniques for their embroidery. Participants will have the opportunity to share their work with others in a friendly and supportive environment. Basic sewing supplies to bring to class includes pins, hand-sewing needles, a seam ripper, a marking pen or pencil, small scissors, and 50 wt cotton thread. Fabric can be purchased at Capital Quilts.

Located in Gaithersburg, MD, Capital Quilts sells high-quality fabrics, patterns, kits, threads, and other stitching supplies, and offers a range of classes, events, and charity programs. Other sewing classes offered at Capital Quilts include The Art of Boro Stitching, a class for all skill levels to learn about this Japanese mending technique, and Machine Quilting for Beginners in which novice quilters how to quilt with a machine. 

DC residents looking to create art will also find a variety of jewelry-making classes in the area, such as Jewelry Techniques offered by Wear Ever Jewelry Studio School. In this four-session class for all skill levels, participants will learn metalsmithing skills such as sawing, drilling, soldering, and stone setting to create copper and silver jewelry. Students should come to class with close-toed shoes and tie back their long hair. All materials can be purchased from the instructor. 

Located in historic Old Town Alexandria, Wear Ever Jewelry Studio School sells handmade jewelry and provides small group classes in its well-equipped studio. Owner and award-winning jeweler Jennifer Park has a master's degree in jewelry/metals and has been published in Art Jewelry and Lapidary Journal.

For another metalsmithing class, Jewelryclassdc LLC offers Metals I for beginners ages 14 and older. Students will learn basic techniques used to create jewelry in this eight-session class, making a minimum of four sterling silver projects (rings, earrings, pendants, bracelets, etc.). Metalsmithing skills learned and used during class include sawing, forging, texturing, filing, polishing, soldering, and basic stone setting. Students will also learn correct tool techniques and safety practices. 

Located in Capitol Hill, Jewelryclassdc LLC is a fully equipped metalsmithing studio where students can take beginner and intermediate jewelry-making classes. Taught by goldsmiths Daniel Valencia and Emily Reeder, students will receive individual attention and step-by-step instructions as they learn techniques such as hammering, sawing, forging, filing, bezel setting, soldering, and basic stone setting. 

Virtual Embroidery Classes 

While in-person embroidery classes are often held at craft stores, sewing and textile workshops, art studios, or community centers, online embroidery classes can be taken from anywhere with an Internet connection. Virtual classes conducted live online allow students to ask questions and receive feedback in real time, all from the comfort of their own homes. If you cannot find an in-person embroidery class in your area, you may be able to find an online course that will save you the commute. The downside is that you likely will have to provide your own supplies and materials for virtual classes. 

92nd Street Y offers Embroidery Basics: Making a Sampler, a virtual class for beginners ages 18 and older. In this class, students will learn eight different essential embroidery classes and complete a sampler project. Students should provide their own supplies including cotton fabric, eight colors of DMC embroidery floss, a water-soluble marking pen, chenille needles, and a 7" embroidery hoop. The Brooklyn Craft Company's Virtual Workshop: Floral Embroidery teaches all skill levels how to add texture and depth to their needlework as they sew a floral stitch sampler. The instructor, Brooklyn-based embroidery artist Angela Stewart, covers topics such as methods for transferring images onto fabric, how to create various stitches such as fishbone, stem, woven wheel, and French knots, and how to create texture in your embroidery projects. Materials needed for the project include a 5" embroidery hoop, a 7" piece of white cotton fabric, embroidery floss, an embroidery needle, a water-soluble marking pen, scissors, and a pattern.

Fiber artists may also be interested in the online class Market Bag (Crochet) offered by the Roots Knitting Academy. In this four-session intermediate class, students will learn various crochet skills – including decreasing, half double crochet (HDC), and mesh and slip stitches – as they follow the pattern French Market Bag by Alexandra Tavel. Participants should have some prior knowledge of crochet techniques including the chain stitch, stitching in the round, single crochet stitch, and double crochet stitch.
