Helen Frankenthaler was a pioneering American abstract expressionist painter whose distinctive "soak stain" technique defined her artistic legacy. She created these remarkable works by diluting paint and allowing it to soak into unprimed canvas, a revolutionary approach that departed from traditional painting methods. Similar to her contemporary Jackson Pollock, Frankenthaler rejected the conventional brush, instead pouring paint directly onto canvas and using sponges to manipulate and blend the colors. This distinctive method produced mesmerizing fields of flowing color that evoke calmness and contemplation. In this class, you'll learn about Frankenthaler's artistic innovations and create your own calming soak stain paintings inspired by her groundbreaking technique.
