Have you ever wanted to turn one of your pieces into a lamp, but weren't sure where to begin?
Join us for a comprehensive hands-on introduction to lamp wiring, designed for ceramicists, sculptors, designers, and makers working across different mediums.
In this three-hour workshop, we'll break down the process of wiring table lamps and plug-in pendant lights, from understanding the individual components to selecting compatible hardware and designing objects that can accommodate electrical fittings.
We'll explore the relationship between form and function, looking closely at the construction details that need to be considered before a piece is made. Where should the cord enter and exit? How should a socket be secured? What kind of openings and supports are needed? How do the requirements differ between a table lamp and a hanging pendant?
Through live demonstrations on finished ceramic pieces, we'll walk through the wiring and assembly process step by step, covering essential tools, electrical safety, component compatibility, and common mistakes to avoid.
Students will have the opportunity to practice assembling wiring components with guidance from the instructor and a teaching assistant. We'll also discuss how to troubleshoot common issues and briefly introduce the additional considerations involved in hardwired pendant lighting.
During the workshop, students will practice wiring and assembling components under guidance. Each participant will receive a complete wiring kit for either a table lamp or plug-in pendant light to use in their own work. No finished ceramic piece is required. Students will walk away knowing how to disassemble and rewire their kit on their finished piece at home.
Our focus will be on portable, plug-in lighting, with an emphasis on helping students develop the knowledge and confidence to incorporate lighting into their own creative practice.
No previous electrical experience is necessary.

Your Wiring Kit
Every student will leave with the components needed to wire either a table lamp or a plug-in pendant light.
We'll introduce the different hardware options during class and help you select the kit that best suits your work. You don't need to bring a finished lamp or decide which kit you'd like before attending.
If your plans change, unused components may be exchanged at Sooki Supply for compatible alternatives, subject to availability and any difference in price. Components must be unused and in their original condition.
Basic hardware includes:
Transparent PVC cord + aluminum on/off socket + all components needed to assemble a table or pendant lamp.
Students interested in premium hardware, including decorative fabric-covered cords and brass sockets, have the option to upgrade their parts upon registration and at the start of the workshop.
Premium Hardware Upgrade — $50
Students may upgrade their included basic wiring kit to premium hardware featuring decorative fabric-covered cord and a dimmable brass socket. This optional upgrade can be selected during registration. Premium hardware is available in limited quantities.
Who Is This Workshop For?
This workshop is open to ceramicists, sculptors, designers, and makers working in a variety of mediums.
Whether you're developing your first lighting piece, experimenting with sculptural lamps, or looking to better understand the technical requirements of lighting design, this workshop will provide a practical foundation to build upon.
No previous lamp wiring experience is required.
Please note: This workshop focuses on portable, plug-in table lamps and pendant lights. Hardwired lighting will be discussed as an introduction only. Installing hardwired fixtures requires additional electrical knowledge and may require a qualified electrician. Students will learn essential safety practices, but participation does not constitute electrical certification or guarantee that a finished handmade fixture meets applicable safety standards.
