Description

Tranquil Space is a vinyasa yoga destination located in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, DC and Arlington, Virginia. Our emphasis is on encouraging the growth of one’s potential, enjoying the sacred in every day, and living our five studio values: initiative, passion, community, creativity, and compassion.

Initiative
Tranquil Space began in Kimberly Wilson's one-bedroom apartment at 16th and U streets in October 1999. With visions of yogis huddled around her fireplace drinking tea, doing yoga, and connecting, she hung fliers around Dupont inviting strangers into her home. Years later, we continue to be innovators in our offerings: local and international retreats, teacher trainings, trunk shows to highlight locally sewn clothing, karma yoga, mindfulness, pre- and post-natal plus tots and tykes teacher training and classes, and even our very own books, CDs, podcast, and clothing line. We are dedicated to spreading tranquility.

Passion

In her living room, Kimberly focused on sweet details such as ribbons wrapped around inspirational quotes placed on students’ mats, aromatic scents, a blazing fire, and homemade chai served in porcelain tea cups. As we’ve grown, these special touches still greet students through our studio decor, lavender aromatherapy, abundance of organic tea and treats, and inspiring music to accompany the experience. During practice, teachers encourage students to honor exactly where they are while also challenging their edge. This nurturing voice encourages students to stay mindful and acknowledge the journey.

Community

Over the years, we moved from a living room, to a sacred 16th street church parlor, to a two-level studio on P Street in 2003, to a 3-story building on 17th Street in DC and a dance studio in 2007 to our home on Wilson Boulevard in 2010 in Arlington. Tranquil Space has attracted hundreds of like-hearted yogis to its nurturing fold with encouragement to mingle over tea and cookies after class, and carry mindfulness off the yoga mat into daily life. Through Doga, picnics in the park, specialty events, and studio celebrations, we made mingling off the mat an intricate part of our mission.

Creativity
Teaching from the vinyasa yoga tradition, our teachers have all completed the studio’s comprehensive 200-hour teacher training—DC’s first Yoga Alliance certified training—and lead creatively flowing classes with emphasis on the breath, body, and spirit. With a focus on helping students become fully aware of the present moment, leaving to-do lists at the door, our teachers also offer numerous workshops and retreats to assist yogis in finding a tranquil space on and off the yoga mat.

Compassion: Giving back to the community has been important since our humble living room beginnings. We plant a tree for every class pass purchased, donate a portion of all proceeds to an assortment of charities, and host classes for charities chosen by our talented teachers. Recognizing the importance of yoga as a catalyst for living a fuller life, we launched our own non-profit in 2006, Tranquil Space Foundation.

Recognition
In 2004, Georgetown Hoya honored Tranquil Space as the best yoga studio in and around Georgetown and in 2005, Tranquil Space was voted the best yoga studio in DC by The Washington Post‘s Best Bets — a label that marks Tranquil Space as one of the top 50 businesses in Washington, DC. In 2007, Tranquil Space was named one of the top 25 yoga studios in the world by Travel + Leisure magazine. In 2008, Kimberly Wilson was honored as an emerging leader in philanthropy by Greater DC Cares. In 2009, Tranquil Space was named best yoga studio by Washington CitySearch. In 2011, Kimberly Wilson was named among the top yoga teachers in DC by Washingtonian.

As we continue to grow and evolve, we’re honored to have the support of Washingtonians. Please stop in for a visit to sip tea and shop our tranquility boutique, or roll out your mat for one of our passionate practices.
