Full Moonrise Over the Nation’s Capital

This specialized photography experience offers you the opportunity to create striking images of three iconic monuments, the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and Capitol Building, beautifully aligned in your viewfinder during the magical light of twilight. The dramatic backdrop includes a rising full supermoon, photographed from the vantage point of the Netherlands Carillon adjacent to the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. Professional architectural photographer E. David Luria will guide you through this carefully timed safari, coordinating with sunset and moonrise to capture optimal conditions.

You will learn single-exposure techniques and, for cameras with this capability, double-exposure methods for twilight and moonlight photography. As the evening progresses, you will continue to the nearby Marine Corps Memorial to photograph the newly restored soldiers' sculpture framed dramatically against the rising moon. For photographers with double-exposure capability, the instructor will demonstrate how to creatively position the moon from one corner of the frame to appear directly over the Washington Monument, creating a striking compositional effect.

Location details: Meet at the stone plaza in front of the Netherlands Carillon in Arlington, Virginia, adjacent to the Iwo Jima Memorial. The nearest Metro station is Arlington Cemetery on the Blue Line; Rosslyn station serves the Blue, Orange, and Silver Lines. Street parking is available in nearby side roads.
