The National Gallery of Art's west wing sculpture collection presents photographers with an exceptional creative opportunity. These three-dimensional artworks, already crafted with careful attention to light, form, and purpose, become entirely new subjects when viewed through the lens of a camera. This hands-on class explores how thoughtful photography can reimagine sculptures and reveal fresh perspectives on established works.
By developing a keen awareness of light, shadow, texture, and perspective, photographers unlock hidden layers within sculptural pieces. You'll discover how to highlight fine details, capture subtle moods, and reveal unexpected relationships between forms. The art of photography transforms these considerations into powerful visual tools for interpretation and expression.
Throughout this course, you will work directly in the gallery spaces, learning how your camera decisions create dramatic changes in the final images. Camera position, framing choices, depth of field control, and precise timing all work together to convert static, solid objects into engaging photographic compositions. Whether you focus on isolating a specific gesture, emphasizing the scale of a piece, or exploring abstract interpretations, this class moves beyond simple documentation. Instead, you'll develop the skills needed for meaningful visual storytelling that uses sculpture as your creative foundation.
This class welcomes photographers of all experience levels. Whether you are new to photography or actively working to expand your existing practice, you will gain fresh insights into both the sculptures themselves and your personal creative process.
Learning objectives:
- Develop strong observational abilities by studying sculpture through the lens of form, space, light, and texture; translate these careful observations into deliberate photographic decisions.
- Master creative photographic approaches, including framing, perspective manipulation, and selective focus techniques to create fresh interpretations and compelling original images within the museum environment.
- Strengthen visual storytelling abilities by using photography to convey emotion, suggest movement, or communicate meaning; articulate your unique response to sculptural works through your images.
Camera requirements and recommendations:
- All camera types are welcome, from smartphone cameras to professional DSLR equipment. We do recommend that your chosen camera allows you to use multiple lenses or a zoom function, along with manual exposure controls.
- Lenses ranging from 28mm to 200mm are ideal for this type of work. Please note that flash photography and tripods are not permitted in the museum galleries.
