Description

The Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress stands as one of the most architecturally stunning buildings in the nation's capital, featuring ornate interiors and magnificent grand staircases. The building has recently reopened to the public on a limited basis, operating Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with required timed entry passes. Following an orientation focused on architectural photography techniques, this safari begins with photographing the fountains and the building's impressive exterior. Participants then move indoors to photograph the breathtakingly beautiful Great Hall with its hand-painted architectural details and statuary, concluding in the Observation Gallery where photographs capture the magnificent Reading Room.

Throughout each stop on this DC architecture photo tour, instruction will address low-light and mixed-light photography techniques, methods for photographing the soaring vaulted ceilings in the Great Hall, and how to effectively use wide-angle lenses to maintain straight vertical lines. Composition techniques, proper exposure settings, and strategic lighting approaches will also be discussed.

This safari is currently limited to 5 participants, and the Library of Congress requires that all visitors maintain appropriate social distancing and wear a mask while inside the building.

What to Bring:

  • Camera with a full battery charge
  • Wide-angle lens equivalent to approximately 28 mm in 35 mm format
  • A circular polarizing filter, if available
  • Telephoto lens of at least 100 mm focal length
  • An extra fully charged battery
  • Extra memory card
  • Weather-appropriate clothing

*Tripods are NOT allowed

Refund Policy

  • Cancellations must be made in writing via email at least 10 business days prior to Safari date to [email protected]
  • Cancellations received 9 business days or more in advance of Safari date receive a refund of 75% of the amount paid.
  • No refund is made for cancellations received less than 9 business days before the Safari date.

Washington Photo Safari operates rain or shine. A separate itinerary is followed on rain or snow days, utilizing landmarks with unique photogenic interiors, such as The National Building Museum, Union Station, The National Postal Museum, The Lincoln Memorial, and the Jefferson Memorial.

In the event that an instructor or the school needs to cancel last minute, students will receive a refund less a 5% non refundable registration fee.

In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.
