Explore the ancient art of pit firing at Dockweiler Beach with this hands-on pottery course, where you'll create and fire raku clay sculptures in a high-risk, high-reward pit-firing process, suitable for all skill levels with all materials provided.
Pit firing is a method of firing pottery in a pit dug in the ground, using combustible materials as fuel. It's an ancient technique that was used before kilns were invented, and still used today.
This pottery experience offers students an introduction to firing pottery using a pit at Dockweiler Beach. Students will learn how to make sculptures up to 7" tall from raku clay at Element Art Center for the first session of the course, and how to fire their ware using a pit-firing (bonfire) for the second session. For the pottery, this process is a high-risk, high-reward type of firing. Cracking or imperfect finishes are very possible with this technique.
This workshop is open to all levels- no experience necessary.
All materials will be included!
