Class Description

Description

Join a Digital Photo Academy instructor for a photography session at the Montpelier House Museum, one of the most distinctive and historically significant venues in our Washington DC rotation. This location offers a rare combination of architectural grandeur, rich interior detail, and the kind of layered historical significance that gives every photograph a sense of context and meaning.

The Montpelier House Museum is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places and carries a remarkable history, having hosted distinguished guests including founding father George Washington himself. Located approximately thirty minutes from Washington DC, this expansive plantation-style estate offers both impressive formal architecture and beautifully maintained grounds, making it an exceptionally varied location for photographers at every skill level.

The exterior alone provides hours of photographic material. The scale and symmetry of the main house invite experimentation with formal compositional approaches: centered symmetry shots, leading lines along the historic walkways, and wide-angle vistas that capture the relationship between the mansion and its surrounding landscape. Elaborate courtyards, decorative architectural details, historic doorways, and the surrounding woodland create a diverse and ever-shifting set of subjects that reward both broad and intimate photographic approaches.

For an additional five-dollar entry fee (four dollars for seniors), participants can enter the house and explore the interior. Inside, you will find a remarkable collection of historical textiles, period furniture, kitchenware, fine musical instruments, and decorative arts spanning the late eighteenth to nineteenth centuries. The rooms and hallways of the house provide excellent opportunities to practice compositional principles, including the rule of thirds, symmetry, and the use of architectural lines to guide the viewer's eye. The rich variety of textures throughout, from aged wood to fine fabric to polished metal, offer their own visual challenges and rewards.

Meeting Spot: Meet just outside the main entrance to the Montpelier House Museum. Please note the $5 entry fee to access the interior of the house ($4 for seniors).

What to Bring: Bring your DSLR, mirrorless camera, or preferred camera type with a fully charged battery and all the gear you can comfortably carry. Dress appropriately for the weather, wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring a bottle of water for the session.

Each Composition in the Field class begins with a focused discussion between your instructor and the group, covering the compositional strategies and technical considerations most relevant to the venue. You then move through the location together, shooting and receiving personalized guidance and feedback throughout the session. The Digital Photo Academy operates across more than twenty cities in the United States and Canada, and the images featured in our course materials represent the work of both students and instructors across a wide variety of venues and lighting conditions.

You will have an excellent three-hour session, sharpen your compositional eye, come away with stronger and more intentional photographs, and build a practical foundation for improving your photography in every future setting you encounter.

Please note: If a class must be cancelled due to weather or circumstances beyond our control, we will be happy to work with you to reschedule. A $25 transfer fee applies if you need to move to a new date without at least three days' notice before your scheduled class.
