What you'll learn in this metal working class:

In this class, the student will learn how to create metal inlays in wood using the laser engraver. Each student will be creating a set of four coasters featuring metal (brass, aluminum, or bronze) inlays. Our instructor will demonstrate how to position and operate the laser, as well as how to manipulate the speed and power settings to get the desired depth.

Once engraved, the student will inlay their coasters with metal powder using cyanoacrylate glue and learn how to use various woodworking machinery (miter saw, table saw, edge sander) to shape their coasters before sanding and finishing them with varnish.

A $35 materials fee covers each student’s wood and consumables for their take-home project.

Suggested Prerequisite: Prior completion of Intro to Wood Shop Power Tools or basic woodworking skills are highly encouraged.

Note:
Please arrive 10 minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork. Our shop can be a little tricky to find so we suggest giving yourself extra time for traffic and parking.

Please wear appropriate shop attire:
No loose or baggy clothing. Hair that is shoulder length or longer should be tied back. Please wear closed-toe shoes. No sandals*
