This five-week class focuses on building ceramic sculptures approximately 12 x 12 inches with a focus on concept development, construction and glazing. Taught by Julia Haft-Candell, founder of The Infinite School, in collaboration with Sooki Studio, the course offers a mix of conceptual development, technical instruction and guided studio time.
Participants will explore:
- Working with low-fire glazes
- Alternative firing methods
- Surface texture and finishing techniques
- Concept development through sketching, maquettes, and discussion
- Strategies for building medium scale sculptures
The course is designed for makers with some prior experience in handbuilding who are interested in making mid-sized sculptural work. The atmosphere will be supportive and process-focused, with time for group conversation, individual feedback, and experimentation.
Participants will leave the class with a finished pieces and a better understanding of how to approach sculptural ceramic work in their own practice.
Students will receive one 25lb bag of low fire clay. Additional clay can be purchased if needed. Glaze and all other necessary materials will be provided, students can provide their own low-fire glazes as well. All pieces will be fired within 3 weeks of the final class.
