In this popular one-day workshop, you will have the opportunity to carve your own stone, an art form that is not typically accessible.
For beginners and experienced sculptors alike, you'll be guided through the process of looking into the rock for imagery, carving into material, planning and forming a sculpture and using tools. Hand-carving techniques will be demonstrated and stone carving lore will be discussed. Safety in the studio and tool sourcing will be addressed. You will leave with a stone sculpture in hand.
All materials will be provided. If you have a past stone you need to work on, there is a byos (bring your own stone) option!
Please bring your safety glasses, gloves and mask.

Students have overall enjoyed the classes at Stone Carving Saturdays, praising its relaxation and openness towards student creativity. A notable feature was the individual guidance each student received in tool use. However, there were suggestions to improve the structure of the class, such as introducing all tools at the start as students progressed at different rates. Some students also raised concerns on stone selection process which hindered creating their desired art. A suggestion was also made for offering shorter, cheaper classes where students all use the same stones and create similar pieces. Furthermore, a desire for more direct instruction, such as a basic techniques demonstration, was expressed.

Ample Parking. MBTA accessible #62 bus goes right past it. BEDFORD RAILROAD STATION was built in 1873 by the Middlesex Central Railroad. The building was a focal point in Bedford for many decades. Passengers bought tickets from the agent there for travel to Boston, Concord and Billerica. A Railway Express office handled shipments of parcels. The B&M Railroad decommissioned the Depot in 1958; and the Town acquired the property in 1999. In 2014 the historical building was renovated and is where the stone carving classes reside!
