Join our photography sessions in the Boston Public Garden, one of the most enduringly photogenic locations in the Digital Photo Academy's rotation of Boston venues.
Established just before the Civil War, this beloved park in the heart of the city offers photographers a seemingly endless variety of subjects and compositional opportunities. Waterscapes, bubbling fountains, formally clipped topiaries, dramatic bronze statues, seasonal flowers in bloom, cyclists, dog walkers, and even a small historic cemetery all coexist within a single elegant landscape.
Your instructor will help you work through a wide range of compositional approaches to tell your visual story. You might lie on the ground for a bug's-eye perspective shooting upward through a bed of flowers, or climb to an elevated vantage point and use a formation of topiaries as leading lines below. You could experiment with panning techniques as a skateboarder or cyclist passes through the frame. You'll also work with shutter speed in a deliberate way, either freezing a single water droplet in a fountain at its peak or drawing the moving stream into a smooth, velvety motion blur.
Meeting Spot:
Meet at the equestrian statue of George Washington at the Arlington Street entrance to the Public Garden.
Parking is available in the garage beneath the Boston Public Garden and Boston Common. Enter from Charles Street.
Bring your camera or smartphone along with any gear you can comfortably carry. Ensure batteries are fully charged, and memory cards have space. Dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes.
Each Composition in the Field class opens with a talk from an experienced DPA instructor, followed by a guided walk through one of the 20 photogenic locations across our network of cities. The program includes opportunities for street photography, architectural subjects, farmers' markets, zoo visits, landscapes, and much more. Sample images are drawn from both student and instructor work at venues across the United States and Canada.
You'll enjoy the three-hour session, develop a more intentional approach to your photography, and leave with a practical foundation for making better images in every situation, from travel to family events to everyday creative work.
