Participants will learn the basic techniques of oil painting from an experienced urban landscape painter. They will practice mixing colors; learning color theory as they try out using different pigments. They will learn about qualities of transparency, different combinations of medium, and non-toxic alternative mediums. Participants will create several studies and one complete oil painting from subject matter of their choice. The course will include artist references and critiques of student work.
Materials List:
- Sketchbook
- Images and ideas that you want to work from and/or examples of artists you are interested in or objects to paint
- Paints (see below)
- Variety of brushes in different types and sizes, 5-6 in all, (round, flat, filbert, 2, 4, 6, and 8 size)
- Palette knife,
- Rags
- 2 jars with lids (one for medium, one for washing brushes)
- Linseed oil and odorless paint thinner (there are many to choose from so I will give an introduction for this)
- Stretched Canvas 16” x 20” (suggested size)
- Gessoed canvas paper or boards for practice
- Palette (can be a piece of plexiglass or real glass)
- Easel (optional)
A few notes on paints:
- Have a set of oil paints in primary colors, browns and white (can be synthetic or real pigments, student or artist grade okay)
- Suggested primary colors: Two of each primary color, one warm and one cool version, eg. Cadmium Red or Naphthol Red and Alizarin Crimson; Pthalo Blue and Ultramarine or Cobalt Blue; Hansa Yellow and Cadmium Yellow
- Suggested earth tones: Yellow Ochre, Burnt and Raw Sienna, Burnt and Raw Umber, Titanium White and Ivory Black
- Buy a variety of tubes from the above list, at least one of each primary, plus 1-2 earth tones and white. Or a ready made set is fine too. We will learn to work with the colors that you have!
When class/workshop enrollment is below the minimum three days prior to the first day of class, the class may be cancelled. If there is a cancellation, we will contact registered students at least 2 days before the start of the class/workshop by email or by phone.
We will offer students the option to transfer into another class or receive a full refund for the amount paid.
Classes are not refunded due to failure to attend class, planned absences, minor illnesses, or vacations.
