What you'll learn in this beginner painting class:

Learn oil painting techniques by painting realistic still life- a great introduction to oil paint for beginning painters as well as intermediate painters wanting to hone their skills. Explore the versatility of oil paint as we cover the materials, explore value, brush handling, color and composition. While the focus is on oils, students may work in any painting medium they choose.  


  • Week 1 - Introduction, Materials, Safety, Approach, Clean-up Method Palette: Ivory Black and Titanium White  
  • Week 2 - Value and Edges Palette: Ivory Black and Titanium White  
  • Week 3 - Color Theory- The Munsell System Palette: Ivory Black, Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Yellow Ochre  
  • Week 4 - Understanding Paint- different approaches towards application, different palettes Palette: Ivory Black, Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Yellow Ochre  
  • Week 5 - Working from photos vs. from life Palette: optional full palette or limited palette of your choice  
  • Week 6 - Wrap-up- moving forward, how to critique when alone, bibliography Palette: optional full palette or limited palette of your choice 


Suggested Materials (in your chosen medium):

  • 16x20 Grey Matters disposable palette 
  • Brushes: at least two small, two medium, and two large brushes of either a filbert or flat type (oil and acrylic, choose bristle hairs if you like to see brush strokes, soft synthetic if you like smoother paintings) 
  • painting medium (for folks using oils or water soluble oils, I recommend Gamblin’s Solvent Free gel) 
  • odorless mineral spirits (for folks using oils) 
  • silicoil jar (for folks using oils)
  • rags or paper towels 
  • canvas or panels or watercolor paper- somewhere in the 9x12 to 16x20 range of size  

Paint colors minimum: 

  • titanium white 
  • ultramarine blue 
  • permanent alizarin crimson 
  • yellow ochre 
  • ivory black  

Paint colors full: 

  • cadmium yellow medium 
  • cadmium red or pyrrole red (Winsor red) 
  • burnt sienna 
  • burnt umber

When class/workshop enrollment is below the minimum five days prior to the first day of class, the class may be cancelled. If there is a cancellation, we will contact registered students at least 4 days before the start of the class/workshop by email or by phone.

We will offer students the option to transfer into another class or receive a full refund for the amount paid.

Classes are not refunded due to failure to attend class, planned absences, minor illnesses, or vacations.

If you drop a class:
  • You will receive a 100% refund minus a $15 administrative fee if you drop a class at least 7 days before it starts. 
  • You will receive a 50% refund minus a $15 administrative fee if you drop a class after this point but before the second day of class. 
  • There are no refunds after the second class.
If you drop a workshop:
  • You will receive a 100% refund minus a $15 administrative fee if you drop a class at least 7 days before it starts. No refunds or credit will be given after this point.
