For capturing beautiful historic architecture both inside and outside, the picturesque grounds of Christ Church in Boston represent an ideal location. The building is recognized as the oldest surviving church structure in Boston and is famously known as the Old North Church, a landmark that holds profound significance in American revolutionary history. Your DPA instructor will share professional tips on creative approaches to photographing the distinctive church steeple; guide you through effective framing techniques; teach you "bug's eye" and low-angle perspectives; and show you multiple strategies to transform an ordinary snapshot into a powerful, emotionally resonant image that commands attention.
One compelling approach involves capturing a street-level reference photograph while lying on the ground, which can transform the frequently photographed structure into an entirely fresh and distinctive composition. Either way, you'll benefit from understanding that on April 18th, 1775, church sexton Captain Robert Newman and Vestryman John Pulling Jr. climbed to the top of that historic steeple carrying two lanterns, having received warnings from Paul Revere about the approaching British troops. The surrounding street offers abundant additional photographic opportunities, and the interiors of the various historic buildings in the area each present valuable lessons in ambient lighting conditions and detailed photographic documentation of intricate, ornate designs preserved from centuries past.
Our meeting location will be positioned in front of the Steeple at 193 Salem St., Boston, MA 02113
