This course is designed and optimized for complete beginners to coding. We don't require you to have any prior experience, but at the end of the 4 weeks you will be code literate. You will learn to use conditional logic, arrays, loops, objects, functions, and closures. In later classes, you'll apply your knowledge by adding features to a live full-stack web application.
We truly believe we've created the most effective curriculum for teaching beginner-level coding that exists. Most coding schools don't focus on this level, but for us it's our entire focus. You'll be immersed in a hands-on approach to learning, and you'll be writing code with us from day one. Rather than lecturing you, we'll show you brief demos and then give you opportunities to apply new concepts through challenges.
We primarily use JavaScript, but the focus is on algorithmic thinking and core concepts that are applicable across JavaScript, Python, Ruby, C#, Java, Swift, and the majority of today's popular programming languages. If you're considering a career change, this course makes for an excellent prep for applying to bootcamps, but many people in non-coding roles (managers, product managers, project managers, QA analysts) also find code literacy to be incredibly valuable for improving communication with their technical co-workers.
We maintain a 5:1 ratio of teachers to students at all times, and all of our instructors have worked as professional software engineers. Surprisingly, you don't see this at a lot of coding schools. We'll also bring in alumni guests from immersive bootcamps to chat about what it was like to pivot into software engineering. If that's a path you're considering, you'll have ample opportunities to ask all your questions and hear first-hand from people who have made the journey.
Bring a laptop computer.

Refund Policy
If you tell us you're unhappy with the program at the end of the 3rd class, we'll offer you the option to fully refund your tuition. We ask for you to wait until the 3rd class because we want you to give coding a fair chance. It can be challenging and even frustrating in the beginning, but the solution is almost always just more practice.

Bootcamp Prep: Introduction to Coding in JavaScript
Starting the class with absolutely no coding experience prior, I'm very happy with how much I learned during the Intro to JavaScript Course. Kurt was really great at explaining the fundamentals thoroughly and at a pace that everyone in the class understood. So much help was offered during and after classroom time. The class size is ideal as well - everyone got to know each other and it was easy to discuss the problems they had with their own code while sticking to schedule.
In my opinion, the best part of this course is the fact that it not only explains JavaScript fundamentals, but Kurt provided the resources and material to keep moving forward and learning more on your own, even if you don't plan on going to a bootcamp, etc. As somebody who plans on continuing my coding practices independently, this is a great asset.
I highly recommend First Step Coding to anybody who wants to start coding confidently. It was a fantastic, incredibly helpful course taught by great people!

Bootcamp Prep: Introduction to Coding in JavaScript
I am a 25-year old Solutions Architect who works with developers all day, but with no background in coding. I've been thinking about getting into coding for a while now, but I didn't want to commit financially to an immersive bootcamp, nor quit my full-time job. Most bootcamps also typically require some background in Javascript, and I didn't know how much of a background was needed, nor the best way to teach myself JS. After some researching, I found out about FSC's course which was significantly less than the typical $15K price tag, and only 4 weeks during after work hours. It was just the right amount for me to get my feet wet (and decide if coding is something I want to make a career of ) while still being able to maintain my full time job. After finishing the course, I have since been able to talk to my developer co-workers about their code...and it feels great. I really learned a lot in this course and cannot recommend it highly enough!
