Introduction to Sewing Part 2

This seminar is second in a series of how to sew from the ground up. It is not project based, but knowledge based. This session is concentrated on more fabric basics, understanding different stitches and more of their uses, sewing sample seams and finishes, hand stitching and different uses. 

• How to prepare your fabric for your project 
• How to layout a pattern to cut / and tricks to pinning or fastening to fabric 
• Different techniques for transferring markings from pattern to fabric 
• Continue with straight and zigzag stitch samples and variations for one’s notebook 
• How to sew corners 
• How to sew curves 
• Use an overlock (serger) machine (whether yours you bring or one provided by the studio) 
• Demonstration of various hand stitches and their usages. 

Samples for one’s notebook will be made with each stitch. Each seminar in this series will include a section on fabric and the student will receive samples of various fabrics with each session so an understanding of industry terms may be obtained with actual hands on samples. It is recommended that you bring a notebook to keep your samples and handouts from each session in.

What to Bring

Your sewing machine if you have one, or if you want to learn on one of the industrial machines at the studio that is available also. If you do not own a sewing machine and are waiting to purchase one until you have a little more knowledge, there will also be a few homeowner machines to learn on provided for your use during class. If you have tools and notions, please bring them. DO BRING your manual and thread and bobbins. 

Each session builds on the previous session, but one is not required to take all sessions. Come for what you want to learn. The goal is to get you comfortable with sewing basics from the ground up so you can be confident in your sewing endeavors, whether designing with a knowledge of construction techniques, or simply comfortable making your own clothes, or anything in between.
