What you'll learn in this beginner photography class:

This is not a how-to, step-by-step kind of workshop. It's designed to provide stimulus and fresh challenges to the emerging shooter, as well as critical feedback and group discussion on concept and execution while on location.

Being a photographer on assignment, you sometimes get sent to far-flung reaches of the Earth, or your neighborhood, on a mission to tell the story, or document what is happening, or simply to "bring back something I can use". Whether you have an interest in raw photojournalism, travel photography, street style blogs or environmental portraits, more often than not you'll be finding yourself on location.

Some topics we'll be covering:
  • Understanding your environment and maximizing it
  • Photographing people you don't know (yet)
  • How a scene can change depending on the time of day
  • Responding creatively to a brief
  • Being fearless and trying new things
This course is not for beginners. If you are not already comfortable and proficient with controlling exposure through aperture / shutter speed / ISO, color (white balance), motion blur and the like, please consider taking Field Guide I first.

Students will be on location for virtually the entire duration of this course. We'll disclose the meeting location (within the 5 boroughs, of course) two days before the start of the Field Guide. Instructors will hand out assignments and a map of the area, as well as some background details, and students will get to work.

Class will meet rain or shine, so be prepared and dress appropriately. We'll show you how to weatherproof your camera using a simple ziplock bag. A DSLR is preferred but not required. Once you're registered, you'll receive detailed instructions on meeting time, location and what additionally, if anything, to bring.

Cancellation Policy

Because space is limited and classes often fill up, students cancelling class last minute may prevent other students from signing up for that session.  For this reason, we require that students who need to reschedule their registration within 72 hours prior to the class scheduled start time will be required to provide a 25% re-registration fee* to transfer to another session.

We are here to guide you through class selection to make sure you benefit from our courses, so feel free to contact us for any questions regarding class selection, registration issues, or if you need to transfer to a different session.
While we encourage you to make every effort to attend your registered class, we understand if your situation changes unexpectedly.  Unfortunately, the same situation applies with our limited capacity.  Therefore, students who need to cancel their registration for whatever reason within 72 hours prior to class scheduled start time will be also be assessed a 25% cancellation fee* from any refund requested.
We really appreciate when people let us know they can't make a class, even if it's last minute.   In some cases there may be a student on the waiting list that we can offer that seat to. No-shows are rather unhelpful for this cause, and so we charge a 50% fee* to transfer or refund a registration in the situation of a no-call no-show.   Also, please note:

  • Gift certificates are non-refundable
  • Credits, promotional discounts, or any special arrangements will be one time per individual. Course Cancellation by BKC.
  • If less than 4 people are enrolled in a course we will cancel that class and offer students a full refund of the amount paid or a credit towards a new course within a month of the canceled course start date.
  • BKC reserves the right to change instructors if needed without prior notice.
  • If a class is cancelled because of weather conditions or illness of an instructor, BKC will schedule a make up session.

Attended: 5 Dollar Fridays: The Lowdown On Lenses

It was very informative

Attended: Crash Course: Quick and Dirty Portraits

Good foundation for those interested in taking better portraits.

Attended: Crash Course: DSLR (3 hours)

Fun and incredibly informative class. Instructor is very good at explaining the basics about photography for beginners. Looking forward to going back and taking some additional classes now that I have the basics covered!

Attended: To Dye For: An Intro to Fabric Dyes

The Fabric Dyes class was such a fun experience. Rawan was an amazing teacher, and super sweet. She really encouraged us to explore our creativity. I also enjoyed the intro to color theory and inspiration, but there was definitely tons of time to get our hands dirty and dye fabric. We started with swatches and then switched to larger tapestries. I loved experimenting with the colors, and the small class size really made it interactive and fun. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who is interested - truly fun and a great learning experience!
