What you'll learn in this clay class:

Clay is a grounding material. Whereas drawing and painting are abstract and heady, clay is direct. There is no illusion you are trying to lift up out of the flat paper, no transfer from 3D to 2D. Clay is direct and honest and weighted. You can squish it and slap it and smooth it and pull it and squeeze it with your hands. Clay is a grounding material.

In this class, students will work from live models to sculpt fast gesture figure studies in clay. We will practice additive, subtractive, and relief style sculpture methods. Focus will not be on producing large finished polished sculptures. No armature will be used. Instead, these will be small clay versions of figure drawing gestures – informal sculptures that capture the essential weight and movement in a pose. Students will learn contrapposto and what it means for weight and balance in the Russian and Mannerist approaches, as well as studying issues of form, anatomy, planes, and space.

This class is open to all levels. If you have never taken a figure drawing class before, please bring the prerequisites of curiosity, patience, self compassion, and tenacity.

Required Materials:
This class will use low fire clay supplied by the League. A few choice sculptures will be selected for firing in house at the end of the quarter. The materials fee covers a tool kit for you to keep, firing fees, and clay for day 1. Students will purchase more clay as needed.

Students will purchase a tool kit that includes:

  • Wire cutter
  • Toothed scraper carving tool
  • Skewers
  • Zippered pouch to keep them in

Additional Fee: Please bring $25 for the materials fee.
